What is the plot of Gladiator (2000)?

Set in the year 180, Gladiator follows Emperor Marcus Aurelius’ (Richard Harris) loyal Roman general and advisor Maximus Decimus Meridius (Crowe). The ageing emperor is worried about his son Commodus, (Joaquin Phoenix), whose twisted ways make him unfit to rule Rome. Marcus Aurelius, instead, wishes for Maximus to succeed him as regent. Upon learning this, Commodus takes matters into his own hands, secretly killing his father and proclaiming himself the new ruler.

When Maximus refuses to accept Commodus’ reign, he is arrested to face execution. He escapes and returns home, only to find his wife and son executed. The following turn of events forced him into slavery and becomes known as the “Spaniard”. From being a respected general, he becomes a gladiator, fighting in Rome’s Colosseum to gain his freedom. But freedom is not the only thing he’s after as Maximus is determined to use the very same fighting pit to finally seek retribution.

Gladiator (2000) was directed by Ridley Scott from a screenplay written by David Franzoni, John Logan, and William Nicholson. A sequel, Gladiator 2, is scheduled to hit Australian theatres on 14 November 2024. It stars Paul Mescal as Lucius, Maximus and Lucilla’s son. A third movie is also currently in the works.
