In this new Channel 5 original psychological drama, a father’s efforts to protect his daughter from a man he deems dangerous backfires when everyone around him presumes he’s only being overly protective. Convinced something is off with the young man who’s claiming to love his daughter, he goes to great lengths to investigate his past. But what he discovers is far more unsettling than he ever expected.

Struggling local fisherman Ed Collier (Jason Watkins) strives to make a living as competition with the other fishermen gets tougher. A determined family man, he is especially protective of his daughter, Abbie (Poppy Gilbert), after losing his son to a boating accident 15 years ago.

When a wealthy, successful young man, Ryan Wilson (Aneurin Barnard), begins a romance with Abbie, suddenly entering their lives, Ed is not convinced he has the best of intentions. While his wife Claire (Cathy Belton) believes his suspicions are unreasonable, he knows his daughter’s boyfriend Ryan is bad news. This leads the still-grieving father to play private investigator, discovering alarming information about Ryan.

Things take a darker turn when a dark secret from Ed’s past returns, unearthing his connection with the man he’s intensely wary of. As he becomes more resolved to drive Ryan away from their lives, both engage in a final confrontation that leaves both Ed and Ryan’s lives hanging in the balance.

A television adaptation of T.M.Logan’s 2020 novel of the same name, The Catch is directed by Robert Quinn from a script written by Michael Crompton. Executive producers include Rachel Gesua, Suzi McIntosh, Herbert Kloiber, David Swetman, Aaron Farrell, and Trevor Eve. More than a chilling thriller, The Catch also aims to tackle pertinent moral questions of whether one should be judged for his distant past.
