Peacock’s new dark comedic thriller, Based on a True Story, has been confirmed to drop in Australia in June. It follows a realtor, a former tennis star, and a plumber as they turn people’s obsession with true crime into a dangerous sideline. But as their fascination with a serial killer pushes them to play with fire, they find themselves embroiled in his twisted crimes.
Turning the true crime genre into a satire, Based on a True Story features an ensemble cast that includes Kaley Cuoco, Chris Messina, Tom Bateman, Natalia Dyer, and Liana Liberato. Ahead of its premiere on streaming TV, here’s everything you need to know about the new Based on a True Story series.
What’s in this Guide?
How to watch Based on a True Story in Australia
Married couple Ava (Cuoco) and Nathan Bartlett (Messina) are on the brink of bankruptcy. When a serial killer begins attacking victims in their neighbourhood, Ava, who’s a die-hard true crime fanatic, thinks it would be a good idea to track and anticipate the killer’s next move, all the while recording a podcast!
Desperate to escape their dismal financial woes, which only gets worse as days go by, and revive their youthful dreams, they decide that the true crime tidal wave is a unique opportunity to change their lives. Alongside Matt Pierce (Bateman), a plumber with the same goal, their lives unexpectedly collide, exposing America’s obsession with true crime.
Inspired by a bizarre true event, Based on a True Story is created by Craig Rosenberg, which Peacock had given a straight to series order to. Rosenberg is also an executive producer alongside Jason Bateman, Michael Costigan, and Alex Buono, with Roxie Rodriguez (Aggregate Films) and Melissa Blake co-executive producing.
