100 foot wave

There’s something about the ocean and its waves that always leaves us mesmerised and intrigued. While most are content with just listening and watching its motion, feeling its strength from afar, others have got to chase and ride it. And for surf legend Garrett McNamara, high waves mean big thrills.

This is exactly what 100 Foot Wave, a new docuseries that premiered in Australia last December, is all about. Find out how to watch episodes of this adventure-filled documentary with the information below.

What’s in this Guide?

At age 11, Garrett McNamara started surfing and by the time he was 17, became a prolific surfer and was active on the competition circuit. When tow surfing became a thing in the 1990s, which typically involves using jet skis to get on taller waves, McNamara was one of the first to join the movement. Eventually, chasing and catching giant waves that were initially thought impossible to undertake became a challenge he accepted with great delight. This then started his dream and mission in life – to find the biggest waves in the world.

The six-episode series documents McNamara’s 10-year search of the tallest wave. While this seems like an adventure-driven journey, the path towards the world’s biggest wave is not all beer and skittles. Together with his wife, Nicole McNamara, CJ Macias, Andrew “Cotty” Cotton, Justine Dupont and several big-wave surfers from across the world, the athletes reflect on how they push themselves beyond limits, suffer life-changing injuries, deal with frustrations and near-misses, and everything that goes on in between.

After he finally broke the record for catching a nearly 80 foot tall wave at Nazaré, Portugal, McNamara fulfilled his most daring goal in his surfing career thanks to Nazaré’s largest swell. More importantly, he, alongside locals, helped transform the beach from being a small fishing village into the world’s greatest big-wave surfing destination. Over the course of the docuseries, the show blends Nazaré’s transformative story with McNamara’s ongoing search for the seemingly mythical 100-foot wave.

The danger of the sport is also highlighted in the show with McNamara and other surfers getting into accidents. Despite years of training and preparation, things can always take a dark turn. As such, audiences are reminded of the lethal risks being a constant element in the sport. Every time surfers arrive, they either ignore or heed safety advice and what they choose to do makes a great deal of difference. In a particular episode of the series, Garrett grows concerned over proposed safety measures due to these past injuries.

The documentary is directed and executive produced by award-winning filmmaker Chris Smith (Fyre: The Greatest Party that Never Happened). Also serving as executive producers are Joe Lewis, Maria Zuckerman, Ryan Heller and Michael Bloom.
