TV Evolution in Australia

TV in Australia has undergone significant changes for the better in recent years. Previously, we were restricted to watching whatever happened to be on the handful of available networks – and what’s more, we had to be planted on our couch at exactly the time when it was on or we’d miss out. Along came cable TV, and our options increased tenfold – but it didn’t stop there. A plethora of streaming TV services followed, and suddenly we had more to choose from than we could have previously dreamed of. Now, not only do we have a plethora of options at our disposal, but we also have the ability to watch wherever and whenever we want.

There’s no doubt that this is an improvement, but the vastly increased number of choices means that things can get a little confusing at times. Where in the past we simply turned on our TV and flicked through a few channels, now our decision is a bit more complicated. Each and every provider has a unique range of content, and when you add into the mix subscription fees and other factors like data requirements, what should be an easy decision can quickly become overwhelming.

But just how did this happen? Going from a handful of free-to-air networks to an abundance of choice in just a few short years is a drastic change. So what exactly caused it?

The Transformation of Australian TV

In the past, analogue TV stations were pretty much all we had. Whatever they showed, you watched, and you’d make the time to do so at whatever time the network chose to air it. A VCR, giving you the opportunity to record TV and watch it later, was a luxury.

Then cable and satellite TV came along, disrupting the status quo in a big way. The range of content on offer improved drastically, and though on demand viewing wasn’t initially available, there were channels dedicated to showing repeats in case you missed your favourites.

Soon after, our previously analogue free-to-air stations became digital, giving them the ability to not only show more content, but also commit to online streaming. 2008 saw the first such streaming service with the launch of ABC’s iView – the rest would soon follow.

Seven years later, and the industry was once again flipped on its head with the arrival of Netflix to the country. Suddenly, a range of content not previously seen on any single platform in Australia was all available in the one place.

Today, Netflix is one of many. There is now an enormous array of streaming services available in the country. Some charge a monthly fee to access the entire library, while others charge on a per-view basis – others still combine the two. Each platform, however, offers an entirely unique range of content. A great thing in terms of variety, but also a fact which can make it particularly confusing to decide what on earth you should put your hard-earned into.

Fortunately, we’ve got a team of experts on hand who know the benefits and drawbacks of all of your options. Read on!

How to Tune in

Choosing how to watch your favourite shows, movies and sports isn’t a one-size-fits-all scenario. The platform that best suits you might not suit someone else, and just which one is ideal for you is contingent on a whole range of factors. The most obvious is, of course, what you like watching, but other things like your budget and internet connection also play a role.

As a result of this complexity, it’s important to understand exactly what you need. So, just what factors should you be looking at prior to making your decision?

Content

This is probably the most obvious – and likewise the most pertinent factor that you need to take into consideration. Different services offer different content, and even when there are overlaps – which happens fairly often – confusing licensing laws mean that different seasons and episodes may be absent across platforms. On top of that, you need to consider what type of TV you like to watch – are you a reality show guru, prefer your movie classics, or can’t get enough live sport? These are the questions you need to ask yourself as you go through the selection process.

Price

How much this will bother you obviously depends on your budget, but generally people will be looking for something which offers a little bang for their buck regardless of what they can afford. Most streaming platforms are very affordable, particularly compared to days past when you’d be paying to rent whatever you wanted to watch at a video store. Many platforms offer a very reasonable monthly fee to access their entire library, while others are a little more pricey – though obviously when this is the case, the range of content is typically a little more extensive.

Data Usage

It’s important to know just how much data different streaming services use, as this can ultimately impact the overall cost you pay. If one platform costs a little less per month but uses more data than alternatives, those without unlimited data in their internet plans could end up paying more than they bargained for, either as a result of extra charges for exceeding data allowances or as a result of upgrading to a more data-heavy plan.

So, with these factors in mind, what streaming platform should you be looking at? You have a number of options: Foxtel is still leading the way when it comes to pay TV, and is always worth looking at. With a wide variety of channels available, tons of original content, and exclusive broadcast rights to popular US series’, it’s a worthy investment for the entire family. Although not as comprehensive, Foxtel Now is a good replacement if you prefer your entertainment delivered via broadband. There’s also Fetch TV, which offers great streaming devices and a good range of premium channels for a low monthly price, as well as many more options.

Foxtel

Thanks to years of experience, Foxtel remains the most popular pay TV provider available. Offering customised channel packs well-suited for the entire family, the telco is a great choice for anyone looking to bring their entertainment to the next level. Clients enjoy a wide selection of live sports, as well as popular movies and shows from Australia and around the world. Moreover, you can now watch live 4K programming using the new iQ4, Foxtel’s most advanced set-top box, which allows you to record and rewind live TV. You can also access titles On Demand and watch on the go with the Foxtel app.

Foxtel From Telstra

Foxtel from Telstra is ideal for Telstra subscribers who want to enjoy everything Foxtel has to offer. You can choose between several channel packs, again based on what interests you most. You also get the set-top box, access to On Demand and the Foxtel app. Plus, if you bundle it with a broadband plan, there are some pretty amazing deals available. All in all, Foxtel from Telstra offers over 95 unique channels, 6,000 on demand movies and shows, exclusive sports packages and much more – great for families looking to keep everyone entertained.

Kayo Sports

For sports lovers who don’t want to have to pay for TV shows and movies they likely won’t watch, Kayo Sports is the way to go. Australia’s first sports-dedicated streaming service, Kayo uses Foxtel’s sports channels to offer over 50 sports, live or on-demand and in High Definition. With nothing but sport on the service, it comes in far cheaper than Foxtel itself, and with a number of great features like No Spoilers, SplitView and Key Moments, it’s the best way to tune in to all of your favourite sports.

Ten All Access

Network Ten recently joined the streaming tv game by launching Ten All Access in partnership with CBS in the US. With their 1-month free trial, you’ll get instant access to over 7,000 commercial-free episodes from classic favourites, original shows, latest releases, plus 24/7 CBSN live stream. Ten All Access’ library features combined shows from both Network Ten and CBS, which includes reality shows like The Bachelor and Survivor, plus classic hits like NCIS and CSI. For just under ten dollars a month, Ten All Access offers a pretty sweet deal given the quality and acclaim of the shows they have on offer – which we can expect to expand even more in the near future.

Fetch TV

An excellent alternative to Foxtel, Fetch’s strength lies mainly in its powerful boxes: Fetch Mighty and Fetch Mini. All you need to do is get a box and subscription, plug it in to your internet, and enjoy all your entertainment in one place. You can pause, rewind and record live TV, access popular streaming services, or purchase/rent titles from the Movie/TV store. As for channel packs, Fetch offers a diverse selection, including world channels, options for sports enthusiasts, and premium packs for as low as $6/month.

Foxtel Now

A great alternative for those who like their entertainment delivered via the internet, Foxtel Now comes with a great selection of channels and no complicated installation process. You simply sign up, choose the channel packs you fancy, and start watching in minutes. Subscribers can watch channels live or access On Demand content anytime. Furthermore, you have the option of pausing or cancelling your subscription whenever you want. Foxtel Now is available on a variety of devices, including laptops, mobile devices, streaming gadgets, and PS4. And if you purchase the new Foxtel Now box, you can enjoy all packs free for two months.

Netflix

It’s been a while since it launched Down Under, but the streaming giant has shown no sign of slowing down. With tons of original productions, Netflix remains a well-rounded, user-friendly, and comprehensive streaming service suitable for the entire family. Subscribers can enjoy a variety of content – movies, TV shows, documentaries, tons of them exclusive to Netflix. Not to mention the fact that the service works seamlessly on almost any device imaginable. And although its library is smaller than the one available in the US, the platform is worth it for its original, award-winning shows alone.

Stan

A strong contender to Netflix, Stan’s library is constantly growing and fast-tracking shows from the US, making it an appealing choice for anyone who wants to stay on top of buzz-worthy content. Not only that, but the platform offers original productions as well, which have been extremely well-received by critics and viewers alike. Available on plenty of platforms, Stan has something for everyone – from kids’ shows to popular movies to documentaries and reality shows. In other words, you’ll never run out of content to binge.

hayu

Hayu only caters to reality fans, but it does so flawlessly. With a huge library including entire seasons of exciting reality, as well as fresh episodes fast-tracked from the US, it’s a great choice for anyone looking for a new, addictive binge. Its low monthly price and user-friendly interface also win the service bonus points. The platform is social-media oriented, offering short videos that are easy to share and fresh gossip from the world of your favourite celebrities. Moreover, hayu’s library is growing every day, with 3,000+ episodes of explosive reality currently available.

Telstra TV Box Office

Looking to watch the latest releases, fresh from the cinema? Telstra TV Box Office, formerly known as BigPond Movies, has your back. From blockbusters to acclaimed classics, Telstra TV Box Office has something in store for each type of movie fan. Whether you’re looking to buy or rent, you have a wide variety of titles to choose from. You can browse by genre or simply access the latest releases from the homepage. And despite its name, Telstra TV Box Office also offers a solid selection of TV shows you can purchase to watch again and again.

Amazon Prime Video

Although currently offering a modest selection of content, Amazon’s Internet selection is expanding month after month. Its low price makes it a worthwhile investment, especially if you’re a fan of Amazon Originals like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Grand Tour, and The Man In the High Castle. Enjoy from the web or with the Prime Video app on your phone, tablet, or select smart TVs — on up to three devices at once. Like with all streaming services, you can cancel your subscription anytime.

DocPlay

Ideal for documentary lovers, DocPlay offers an impressive selection of docos from all around the world. You can join the service for free to access a limited selection of titles or pay a subscription fee to eliminate ads and enjoy DocPlay’s full catalogue. The service is compatible with laptops, mobile devices, Telstra TV 2, the Foxtel Now box, Chromecast, Apple TV, and Sony Android TV. You can watch popular titles or browse categories to find more hidden gems. In short, a must for anyone looking to expand their knowledge.

YouTube Premium

YouTube Premium is certainly worth the investment if you’re an avid YouTube user. It gets rid of ads, opens you up to an entire world of original content from YouTube’s top creators, and enables background playback (listening to videos with the screen off). With YouTube Premium, you can also download YouTube videos to your phone or tablet and watch without a connection.  In other words, it makes your viewing experience better. Moreover, it comes with a free Google Play Music subscription.

Disney+

The arrival of Disney+ in Australia remarkably shakes things up in the streaming business. Content-wise, Disney+ is a solid name that needs no introduction. Aussies can already expect TV shows and films from Disney itself, but the range of content with which the entertainment giant will exclusively offer is of impressive kind. The service will also house movies from Pixar, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Star Wars franchise, National Geographic documentaries, and a massive library of content from 21st Century Fox. What’s even more remarkable is that Disney+ is priced lower than notable competitors Netflix and Stan.

Foxtel + Netflix

Foxtel and Netflix’s collaboration makes it easier for Australians to combine both services into one package. Foxtel owns exclusive rights to many of HBO’s content and other major networks in the US and the UK. Titles like Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, and Westworld are just some of the shows that are hard to forego. Netflix, meanwhile, offers a bunch of original movies and shows with the likes of Stranger Things that any entertainment fan would want to be a part of. Fortunately, choosing between the two no longer needs to be a challenge. With Foxtel + Netflix bundling plans, you can enjoy Foxtel’s vast library of shows and movies with a Netflix Standard plan included. This partnership also coincides with the latest The New Foxtel Experience, placing Australia’s best TV and On Demand, all in one place, on iQ4.

OVOPlay

New telco provider OVO makes mobile subscription substantially worthwhile with OVOPlay. Aussie customers with an OVO prepaid SIM automatically get exclusive access to OVOPlay’s streaming offerings. The company’s current partnerships secure customers access to a variety of sporting events live on your device, including Formula Drift, Water Polo, World Superbikes, and Australian Esport League, just to name a few. Sports fans can enjoy OVO’s streaming service through the OVO app or on your web browser.

Apple TV+

It’s only a matter of time before Apple launches its own streaming service and now it’s here in Australia. Apple TV+ offers a wide range of original content and at a price also significantly lower than some of the popular choices. Some of its lineup includes a reboot of Steven Spielberg’s Amazing Stories, news drama Morning Wars, and sci-fi series See. New Apple users purchasing any new iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac or iPod touch will be given free access to Apple TV+ for a year. Apple also offers a 7-day free trial. It’s important to note that Apple TV+ will only be showing original content. Unlike Netflix, Stan, or Foxtel, no third-party content is available via the new streaming service.
