Summer and cricket are two things that go hand in hand in Australia. We love the sound of the leather ball being struck by willow on ovals around the country. One of the highlights of every summer outside of the international scene in the BBL. Eight teams from around Australia go head to head from the start of December through until the end of January.
The defending champions this time out are the Sydney Sixers. If they win the BBL title again this year they will have not only have produced the competition’s first three-peat, but in the process become the most successful BBL side in history with four wins. They will face stiff competition from the likes of Perth Scorchers, who are also out for a fourth title and revenge after last year’s final loss.
They will be joined by Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars, Adelaide Strikers, Sydney Thunder and Brisbane Heat for eight weeks of cricketing magic.

BBL Ladder 2021/22
Keep up to date with who is out in front during the 2021/22 Big Bash League. This ladder will be updated after each and every regular-season game as the teams battle it out for a place in the final.
Teams to watch in BBL 2021
Here we have picked some of the sides we think are going to be there or thereabouts when the Big Bash League finals get underway in January.
If any of the other teams in the league want to lift the trophy this season, you feel they will have to overcome the Sydney Sixers. They are heading for a three-peat and few would bet against them doing it with overseas players like Tom Curran and Joe Denly at their disposal. They also have some pretty handy homegrown talent in the shape of Nathan Lyon and Jack Edwards.
One of the teams looking to right a few wrongs from last season will be the Perth Scorchers. They were the Big Bash League final losers in 2021, in a match that would have seen them become the competitions most successful team with four titles. The good news is a win this year will mean exactly the same thing.
Brisbane Heat are a side on the rise and should be looking for a place in the final this year. They have a good crop of homegrown and international stars that promise to light up the Gabba. They include the likes of Brendon McCullum, James Pattinson and Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
For a team that promises so much at the start of each Big Bash League campaign, Hobart Hurricanes rarely deliver. But maybe that is about to change? A squad featuring Tim Paine, Joffra Archer and David Moody may look good on paper, but just how much cricket these guys will play due international commitments will be a key factor in success.
Best Grounds in BBL
BBL features some of the country’s most well-known grounds. Here are some of our favourites.
The Melbourne Cricket Ground is probably one of the most famous in the game of cricket. The venue is the place where every cricketer in the world worth his or her salt dreams of playing. The 100,000 capacity stadium is a true sports treasure when full, and will have a big role in this year’s BBL competition.
The Gabba, Brisbane
The Gabba may be a fortress for the national team, but it is also the home of the Brisbane Heat. The groundsmen at the famous venue certainly know how to put down a decent wicket with lots of scoring potential.
One of the more idyllic grounds in the Big Bash League is Stadium Launceston, which will host games featuring the Hobart Hurricanes. It’s one of those classic throwback stadiums that gives a nod to the game’s heritage.
