Channel 10 Australia - TV shows, sports, comparisons and review

Channel 10 Australia - TV shows, sports, comparisons and review

Navigating an unfamiliar territory where network giants had already built deep foundations in terms of reputation and population reach, Network 10 has slowly gained traction over the years with a mix of persistence and smash-hit TV programming. Here we take a look at what the free to air network is all about.

What’s in this Guide?

What is Channel 10?

Initially, Channel 10 was called the Independent Television System (ITS) before adopting the title  The 0-10 Network. During its early years, the network struggled to maintain its operations and observers predicted it would fail. It did not, thanks to the success of such programs as Young Talent Time and Number 96 in the 1970s, the latter of which topped the ratings and attracted several advertisers. Channel 10 finally became Network Ten in 1980 when ATV, one of the first stations launched in the network, moved from Channel 0 to Channel 10.

However, while Ten started attracting audiences and advertisers, the network still saw more transitions, rebranding, and a decline in ratings. It recovered in the mid-1990s and by the 2000s, Channel 10 achieved record-breaking success with the launch of Big Brother Australia and Australian Idol. Today, Network 10 is one of Australia’s main free to air networks and is currently owned by Viacom CBS’ Ten Network Holdings. Unlike streaming platforms, 10 makes the majority of its profits from commercial breaks and ads.

Reality shows

Many of Network Ten’s flagship programs are in the reality TV genre. In fact, the network’s massive success 2001 is all thanks to Big Brother Australia, which became the most-watched program the night it debuted on TV. This reality TV success was then followed by Australian Idol, which was a smash hit for several years.

The high ratings for these shows led to more successful Australian iterations of global reality TV hits. Other reality programs you can watch on Network Ten are I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, Bachelor in Paradise, Making It Australia, and The Hills.

Top TV dramas

Being owned by ViacomCBS, Network Ten’s catalogue of dramas, comedies, and crime thriller shows are sourced from CBS, Paramount, MTV and Nickelodeon, among others. Channel 10 currently airs selected episodes of TV series like Blue Bloods, Crossfire, The Middle, Dark Matter, as well as the Australian soap Neighbours and the US drama The Bold and the Beautiful.

Best comedies

More than drama, Channel 10 also offers a bunch of hilarious programs for easy viewing. Comedies include Seinfeld, Two and a Half Men, Mom, Friends, Anger Management, The Big Bang Theory, and The Exes.

Free movies

More than TV dramas, comedies, and reality programs, there’s plenty of movies you can watch on Channel 10 for free. For sci-fi fans, you can watch blockbusters like Star Trek Beyond, Star Trek Into the Darkness, and The Transformers: The Last Knight. If you prefer horror, there’s plenty to choose from with titles like Boogeyman, The Burrowers, several Leprechaun movies, and Jessabelle.

Documentaries and news

Network Ten’s news program service is 10 News First. The network’s nightly panel show, The Project, is also a well-known program in Australia. For international news coverage, Ten has access to CBS News and airs US programs like 60 Minutes, Dr. Phil, Late Show with David Letterman, and 48 Hours programs.

Sports streaming

When it comes to sports streaming, Channel 10 is the home of Motorsports with TV coverage of the Australian Grand Prix and MotoGP. Sports fans can also watch football with coverage of AFC Asian Qualifiers and Socceroos, as well as mixed martial arts with Bellator matches.

How much are Channel 10’s TV channels?

You can stream and watch Channel 10 shows for free without having to worry about monthly subscriptions or contracts since the network generates its income via advertising. Even access to its catch-up streaming TV app, 10play, is completely free. All you need to do to access Channel 10’s extensive line-up of content is to have the right equipment for it, such as an antenna and a digital TV.

For streaming online, requirements include a compatible device (mobile, PC or streaming boxes) and an internet connection. While Network Ten launched its own streaming service that featured ad-free TV shows with 10 All Access, it didn’t really make much of a difference considering the abundance of streaming services in Australia that offered more variety of content. 10 All Access was then replaced by Paramount Plus.

How does Channel 10 compare with other services?

Channel 10 has flagship programs that audiences specifically want to watch. TV shows like MasterChef Australia and Australian Survivor are just some of the content that you won’t find in other free-to-air networks. The network’s partnerships with CBS, Paramount, MTV, Warner Bros., and Nickelodeon, among others, also ensure that its content line-up remains diverse with so much programming to feast your eyes on.

The network may be lacking in the area of sports but when it comes to television entertainment, Channel 10 has it covered. Check out this our TV guide for a complete listing of every free to air program screening today.

How does Channel 10 compare to Channel 7?

Both channels have their own exclusive local content and partnerships with international media companies. Channel 7 has reality shows like The Voice and The Chase, although Channel 10 matches such offerings with equally popular reality programs. Channel 7’s sports coverage include major sporting events like AFL and BBL and while these are certified favourites in Australia, Channel 10 still has motorsports to offer to fans.

How does Channel 10 compare to Channel 9?

Channel 9 may have a deep catalogue of local and international shows and fares better when it comes to ratings, but Channel 10 is not lagging that far behind. Both have a great selection of reality programs, TV dramas and comedies. Channel 9, however, has broadcasting rights to big sports like NRL and is already a dominant force in current affairs and TV news.

How does Channel 10 compare to ABC?

ABC has a solid footing in the creation of local dramas, while a major part of Channel 10’s library of shows is mostly sourced from its international links and deals. Also, the former is known for successful local dramas like Jack Irish and The Newsreader. Network Ten, on the other hand, mostly offers international TV dramas like This Is Us and Gracepoint.

How does Channel 10 compare to SBS?

SBS is best known for its diverse catalogue of shows and movies, sourcing its content from across the globe, while Channel 10 mostly features TV programs from the US and produces local versions of American reality shows. Since SBS focuses on delivering a wider range of international programming that includes shows from Germany, Denmark, Norway and others, audiences may find Channel 10’s content lineup more familiar.

How does Channel 10 compare with Netflix and Amazon Prime?

The streaming landscape in Australia (and in the world) continues to expand and diversify with so many options to choose from. Popular ones like Netflix and Amazon Prime, for instance, offer thousands of hours of TV shows, docos, and movies, ad-free. Despite this revolutionary change in the way people watch TV, free to air networks in Australia have also been keeping up despite the rigid competition by launching their own catch-up streaming services. And because it’s free, there’s no reason why viewers would not want to be a part of it.

How does Channel 10 compare to Foxtel?

Foxtel has exclusive broadcasting rights to release HBO content in Australia and that’s something that Channel 10 or any other free to air can’t compete with. Foxtel also has its own programming that’s not available elsewhere, except associated services like Foxtel Now and BINGE. TV shows like Wentworth, Upright, and The End are just some of its original shows.

Complete seasons of every huge HBO series like Game of Thrones, The Sopranos and The Wire can only be streamed via Foxtel. Nonetheless, Channel 10 has content that’s just as binge-worthy with the likes of NCIS, Five Bedroom, Humans, SEAL Team and certified TV classics, The Twilight Zone and Sabrina, The Teenage Witch.
