Gentleman Jack Season 2 preview
Gentleman Jack Season 2 continues to follow the relationship of Anne Lister (Suranne Jones) and Ann Walker (Sophie Rundle), two heiresses whose love for each other can no longer be hindered by familial and social expectations. Ann Walker’s mental state deteriorated in the first season of the series as a result of her extreme struggles to suppress her true self and reconcile her homosexuality with her religious beliefs. Ultimately, she realised she needed Anne Lister to be in her life and by the end of season 1, she declared her desire to marry her.
Now living together in Shibden Hall, the second season is expected to focus on the deeper complexities and challenges that the main characters will face as a result of their decision, and how they will surpass each one of them. Anne Lister and Ann Walker’s union is also a threat to Lister’s entrepreneurial rivals. Being both heiresses, the combination of their estates makes them a power couple, much to the chagrin of those who want them to fail.
Anne Lister’s entrepreneurial spirit even more so terrifies the locals as much as her unorthodox romance. In addition, these developments in her life come at a time when Halifax is on the brink of revolution, making her personal and business exploits more and more dangerous.
Just like the first season, Gentleman Jack Season 2 is based on the diaries of Lister, most of which were written in secret code. It has been adapted for television by Sally Wainwright, who also created, wrote, and directed some episodes from season 1. Serving as executive producers alongside Wainwright are Faith Penhale and Laura Lankester.
Gentleman Jack Season 1 recap
Set in the 1800s, Anne Lister returns to Halifax, West Yorkshire heartbroken after a former lover decided to marry a man. Taking over the estate that she has inherited from her uncle, she intends to restore it to its former glory. While doing so, she discovers that the land has a coal mine and that the profit it generates is being stolen by two brothers. The rest of the season showcased her resolve not only to revive Shibden Hall and claim the money she is owed, but also her daring pursuit of Ann Walker, who would later become her wife.
