How to watch The Last Movie Stars in Australia

The Last Movie Stars, a documentary series exploring Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward’s legendary Hollywood careers and decades-long marriage, is coming to Australia in September. Actor Ethan Hawke directs the docuseries while Martin Scorsese serves as executive producer.

Woodward and Newman did interviews with screenwriter Stewart Stern for a personal history project that didn’t transpire. Newman destroyed most of the tapes for unknown reasons; however, some of the transcripts had been salvaged – hence, The Last Movie Stars.

What’s in this Guide?

The Last Movie Stars documentary preview

Director Ethan Hawke brings The Last Movie Stars to your TV screens to celebrate the lives of Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. Standing out from other documentaries, it utilises a unique approach to telling their story, unveiling never-before-seen materials from decades ago and using interview transcripts to build a narrative around their relationship.

Newman’s movie star career began to flourish in the 1960s with roles in The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and many others. Woodward, on the other hand, was already a successful actress when she married Newman, having won the Oscar for The Three Faces of Eve.

While the documentary series highlights the couple’s milestones in their career and partnership, it doesn’t avoid the heaviness of the more serious and complex subjects, such as Newman’s fame and drinking and how this combination brought about self-destructive behaviour.

The Last Movie Stars even chronicles the harrowing tragedies they endured together, including the drug overdose of Newman’s only son Scott, which led to his death at the age of 28 (the Scott Newman Center for rehabilitation was dedicated to him).

More than exploring their journey together, this epic docuseries also delves into the complex nature of acting, artistry, Hollywood, and marriage. For fans of classic cinema, especially those feature films that starred Newman and Woodward, The Last Movie Stars is a must-see.

Joining Hawke in this project are some of the biggest names in cinema, including George Clooney, who reads the salvaged transcripts as Newman, and Laura Linney as Woodward.

A collaboration between CNN Films and HBO Max, The Last Movie Stars became possible thanks to old interview transcripts, engaging Zoom interviews, voice casting, archival footage, film clips and impressive post-production.
