Sherwood Season 2: Release date and where to watch in Australia

November 19, 2024

BBC’s surprise hit, the Sherwood TV series, is now streaming in Australia with a second season arriving on our screens soon.

Writer James Graham created the crime drama series, inspired by real-life events in his hometown. Sherwood is set in a Nottinghamshire mining village where two harrowing murders shock and devastate an already fractured community. The killings lead to one of the largest manhunts in British history.

More than the tragedy of the crimes, the arrival of the police forces awakens historic discord instigated during the Miners’ Strike three decades before.

Season 2 of the Sherwood TV series already premiered in the UK on BBC One last 25 August 2024, concluding on 9 September after six episodes.

In Australia, the release date for the new season has yet to be announced. However, we can expect the latest episodes to drop on streaming TV anytime soon considering it has already finished airing in the UK.

As a guide, it’s worth noting that Sherwood Season 2 already premiered on BritBox US last 14 November.

National broadcaster and leading digital publisher, BBC, launched Sherwood Season 2 in the UK. In Australia, we’ve yet to know which streaming service it will be available to stream on.

While Sherwood Season 1 premiered on Foxtel and BINGE in September 2022, BBC First’s exit from Foxtel’s channel line-up means it won’t be the same for Season 2.

We can however speculate that Sherwood Season 2 in Australia will be offered exclusively by BritBox, following in the footsteps of other BBC shows like Shetland and Call the Midwife.

If you haven’t seen the first season, Stan offers prior Sherwood episodes as of this writing.

BBC’s Sherwood is a mystery crime drama series that’s set in a mining community in Nottinghamshire where series creator and writer James Graham grew up.

It centres on the two appalling murders in the village, setting off a large manhunt that caused further suspicion and antagonism in a town already haunted by its dark past.

As the tragic killings threaten to reopen old wounds from the Miners’ Strike 30 years earlier, resentment festers between long-time neighbours and towards the police that arrive in the town.

In the midst of all the fear and the chaos, we’ll see retired police rivals Detective Chief Superintendent Ian St Clair (David Morrissey) and DI Kevin Salisbury (Robert Glenister) who are forced to reconcile and put their differences aside to get to the bottom of the crime.

Sherwood is inspired by two murders that occurred in James Graham’s childhood town, beginning with the killing of former union activist Gary Jackson (Alun Armstrong) and the murder of trade unionist Keith Frogson in 2004. All characters, however, are fictionalised.

In Sherwood Season 2, new feuding families (the Sparrows and the Bransons) come into the picture with David Morrissey and Lesley Manville reprising their roles as DCS Ian St Clair and Julie Jackson.

Season 2 is set in the present, unlike the first in which the events took place in the mid-2000s. Once again, the small Nottinghamshire village of Ashfield is plagued by another murder, reigniting gang tensions. With violence and nasty politics aggravating conflicts, the village’s peace is put to the test once more.
