How to watch Top Gun in Australia

The massive success of Top Gun: Maverick only warrants a rewatch of its 1986 predecessor, Top Gun. Also starring Tom Cruise, the original Top Gun movie follows Pete “Maverick” Mitchell as he attends the Top Gun Navy Fighter Weapons School, an elite training school for fighter pilots. There, he develops an intense rivalry with fellow student Tom “Iceman” Kazansky (Val Kilmer) and begins a romantic relationship with his civilian instructor, Charlotte “Charlie” Blackwood (Kelly McGillis).

US Naval Aviator Lieutenant Maverick Mitchell and his Radar Intercept Officer (RIO) Lieutenant Junior Grade Nick “Goose” Bradshaw are sent to Top Gun to train as fighter pilots. Reckless and proud, Maverick’s relationship with other pilots proves to be a huge challenge, creating tension and acute rivalry. When a training session ends horribly wrong, Maverick blames himself and considers quitting.

He ultimately decides against leaving. The story takes a thrilling turn after graduation as Maverick and his team are sent on a dangerous reconnaissance mission over enemy territory. Successful in their mission, the pilots share their newfound respect for one another, also bonded by their life-threatening experiences together.

Directed by Tony Scott, Top Gun was the highest-grossing domestic movie of that year, also catapulting Tom Cruise to international stardom. Fortunately in Australia, it’s easy to rewatch the film online with several streaming services offering the movie on demand.

Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to the franchise, Top Gun is a must-see for anyone who loves high-flying action and riveting drama. Its edge-of-your-seat action sequences and notable screen moments, coupled with its memorable soundtrack, makes it an iconic classic that still reels in audiences up to now.
