Colin Firth headlines the new crime drama, The Staircase, streaming on demand in Australia. Based on the 2004 true crime docuseries of the same name, Firth plays novelist Michael Peterson, who was convicted of killing his wife Kathleen Peterson in 2001. Featuring an ensemble cast that includes Toni Collette, Juliette Binoche, Parker Posey, and Sophie Turner, find out how and where to watch episodes of the miniseries here.

What’s in this Guide?

In 2004, filmmaker Jean-Xavier de Lestrade wrote and directed the docuseries, The Staircase, which documents the trial of author Michael Peterson. In 2001, Peterson found his wife dead at the bottom of the staircase at their home and told the authorities that she had fallen.

However, he became the main suspect in the death of his wife after the police concluded she was bludgeoned to death. The director and his crew were granted unusual access to Peterson’s lawyers and even his family, so that de Lestrade’s cameras capture every major highlight involving the very high profile murder trial and Peterson’s defence team.

This time, Annapurna Television and HBO Max are co-producing a dramatic adaptation of the documentary starring Colin Firth as Michael Peterson, Toni Collette as his wife, Kathleen, and Rosemarie DeWitt as Kathleen’s sister, Candace.

It also stars Sophie Turner as one of Peterson’s adopted daughters, Trini Alvarado as his ex-wife Patty, and Michael Stuhlbarg as David Rudolf, Peterson’s defence attorney. Adapting de Lestrade’s gripping courtroom thriller are Antonio Campos and Maggie Cohn, who has come on board as writers and showrunners.
