Special Victims Unit is Law & Order‘s first spin-off, starring Christopher Meloni in the first 12 seasons and Mariska Hargitay as Olivia Benson, now SVU’s commanding officer. Just like the original series, some episodes in Law and Order SVU are partly based on real crimes that have captured significant media attention. It also features stories that tackle political and societal issues.

First premiering in 1999, it’s now one of the longest-running shows on television. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit delves into the world of gruesome crimes, headlined by detectives of a new elite force called the Special Victims Unit, or SVU, who mostly investigate sexually-related crimes.

More than covering the investigation of these cases, Law and Order SVU also explores its characters and how their job takes a toll on their personal lives and mental well-being. Find out where each season of the long-running crime series is streaming in Australia with the information below.

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit premise

Sexually-based offenses are considered the most heinous in the criminal justice system. In the New York City Police Department, the detectives that specialise in investigating and solving such unimaginable cases belong to an elite squad called the Special Victims Unit. Especially trained to take on various sexually oriented crimes, the team is led by Captain Olivia Benson, who worked as a detective in the previous years.

Aside from handling sex crimes, the SVU detectives also investigate child abuse, domestic violence, and other crimes involving disabled and elderly victims. Getting close to vicious felonies as part of their investigation, the members of SVU struggle to keep the dark side of these crimes out of their personal lives, although many cases deeply impact their mentality. How they handle the atrocities they see and their struggle to prevail over the darkness remains to be a major theme of the show.

Currently, the SVU team consists of Captain Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay), Sergeant Fin Tutuola (Ice-T), Assistant DA Dominick Carisi from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office (Peter Scanavino), and new junior dedicated detectives Joe Velasco (Octavio Pisano). Kelli Giddish’s Senior Detective Amanda Rollins departed during Law and Order SVU Season 24, although she returned as a guest star in season 25.
