New Line Cinema’s The Many Saints of Newark, the prequel film to David Chase’s groundbreaking television series and award-winning HBO drama series, The Sopranos, finally premieres on streaming TV in Australia. The movie offers a glimpse of Tony Soprano’s childhood in New Jersey in the midst of the 1967 Newark riots. With African-American and Italian communities at odds, chaos arises and creates a dangerous rivalry.

The film performed well on streaming via HBO Max in the US. Naturally, it also contributed to a spike in viewership for The Sopranos. Here in Australia, you can stream both The Many Saints of Newark and the complete seasons of The Sopranos using this guide.

If you’re a huge The Sopranos fan, a movie that offers a backstory of one of the greatest and most influential characters on television should be a no-brainer. Enter The Many Saints of Newark. Here, you’ll see a young Anthony Soprano (William Ludwig) growing up in one of the most lawless eras in Newark’s history.

When a rival gangster begins to rebel and challenge the powerful DiMeo crime family, troubles turn lethal. Caught up in such tricky times is the uncle Tony looks up to, Dickie Moltisanti, who struggles to manage both his professional and personal duties.

As a part of the DiMeo crime family, Dickie uses his influence on the young Tony, ultimately turning him into an all-powerful mob boss that we now know as Tony Soprano. A companion piece to the iconic TV series, The Many Saints of Newark proves that even after 15 years, The Sopranos still captivates.

This film is directed by Emmy award-winning director Alan Taylor and written by The Sopranos creator David Chase alongside former Sopranos writer Lawrence Konner. It’s also worth mentioning that Chase has announced his interest in producing a sequel to The Many Saints of Newark, only this time it will follow Tony Soprano in his 20s.

The Many Saints of Newark first premiered on the big screen in October last year. It was produced by HBO Films and was internationally distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

The Sopranos fans in Australia who wanted to stream the film were able to do so via pay-per-view services like Telstra TV Box Office, Amazon Prime Video, Fetch TV, iTunes, Microsoft Store, and Google Play Movies.

After several months of waiting, The Many Saints of Newark finally premieres on streaming TV, which launches on 6 August 2022 on Foxtel’s Movies Premiere. The crime drama also debuts on BINGE a day earlier on 5th August.
