Where to watch the Harry Potter movies in Australia (2026)

All eight Harry Potter films and the three Fantastic Beasts films stream on HBO Max in Australia. HBO Max costs from $11.99 a month for Basic with Ads, and that plan is included with Foxtel at no extra cost. If you do not have it, Apple TV rents every film for $4.99, Prime Video and Fetch rent most of them at the same price, and buying starts at $12.99. HBO's new Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, premieres on HBO Max on Christmas Day 2026.

The eight Harry Potter films run for 1,179 minutes in total, a little under 20 hours. The Fantastic Beasts films are a prequel series set in the 1920s and 1930s, about seventy years before Harry's story. The first of them is set in 1926, and the series was planned to cover the years from 1926 to 1945.

Chris Columbus directed the first two Harry Potter films, Alfonso Cuarón the third, Mike Newell the fourth and David Yates the last four. If you are watching with children, check each film's classification first: JustWatch lists the first three films as PG, the other five as M and all three Fantastic Beasts films as M.

How to watch without a new subscription

• Foxtel customers: the HBO Max Basic with Ads plan is included with Foxtel. Foxtel's announcement says it works on internet-connected iQ3, iQ4 and iQ5 boxes.
• Rent: $4.99 a film on Apple TV (4K). Prime Video (4K) and Fetch (standard definition) rent most of the films at $4.99 as well, but not every title.
• Buy: $12.99 on Fetch, $14.99 on Apple TV and Prime Video. The exception is the first film on Prime Video, which JustWatch lists at $19.99.
• Free-to-air: screenings are occasional. When we checked the ICE TV guide on 27 October, the six Harry Potter films we could look up had no free-to-air showings in the coming week.

What HBO Max costs

HBO Max's Australian site lists $11.99 a month for Basic with Ads, $15.99 for Standard and $21.99 for Premium, or $119.99, $159.99 and $219.99 a year. Basic with Ads streams in HD on two screens with ads and no downloads. Standard is ad-free with 30 downloads, and Premium adds 4K, four screens, 100 downloads and Dolby Atmos.

The HBO Harry Potter series

HBO's series Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone has eight episodes and premieres on HBO and HBO Max on Christmas Day, 25 December 2026. Mediaweek reported in August that it is due to debut on HBO Max in Australia this Christmas. No Australian start time or episode schedule has been published yet, so we cannot say whether all eight episodes will arrive at once or weekly.

Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry, Arabella Stanton plays Hermione and Alastair Stout plays Ron. John Lithgow is Dumbledore, Janet McTeer is McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu is Snape and Nick Frost is Hagrid. HBO renewed the series for a second season in May 2026, adapting Chamber of Secrets, and it is planned to run for 10 years.

The first trailer arrived in late March 2026, when HBO Max confirmed the Christmas date.
