The story of the most exceptional female warriors to ever live has been adapted for the big screen with the 2022 film The Woman King. Starring Viola Davis as a general who trains young female warriors to be the fiercest fighters in the kingdom, this historical epic is inspired by the history of the Agojie, the all-female unit that served as protectors of the West African kingdom of Dahomey from the 17th to 19th centuries.

Making its streaming TV debut in May, find out how to watch the movie online using this guide.

What’s in this Guide?

In this emotionally epic journey, Oscar winner Viola Davis plays General Nanisca, the leader of the all-female unit of warriors protecting their kingdom. The threat of a foreign enemy determined to eliminate their heritage and destroy their way of life has the kingdom of Dahomey preparing for an all-out war. Tasked to train the next generation of female warriors is General Nanisca herself. Armed with exceptional skills and a fierceness unlike anything witnessed in history, they become their kingdom’s formidable line of defense.

Inspired by true events, the 2022 film is a remarkable story of the female warriors who shielded their home and fought against foreign invaders. It is directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood from a story developed by Maria Bello and Dana Stevens. Praised for its performances and action sequences, The Woman King works as both a historical epic and an action-packed treat for fans of both genres.
