The Invisible Pilot documentary

Produced by Adam McKay (Don’t Look Up, Succession), The Invisible Pilot chronicles the bizarre true story of Gary Betzner, a man who jumped off a bridge in front of his family in 1977, and the wild discoveries that follow. Unraveling a mysterious story that consists of secret identities and a double life, Betzner’s ‘death’ and disappearance is just the beginning. Available in Australia via select streaming TV services, find out how you can watch episodes of The Invisible Pilot documentary using this guide.

What’s in this Guide?

The Invisible Pilot follows Betzner, a top-notch pilot who worked as a crop duster in Arkansas with a seemingly happy home life. In 1977, he unexpectedly jumped off a bridge while his wife and daughter were in the car. His wife, Sally, already hysterical over witnessing her husband’s suicide, had the small town Arkansas community banding together to search for him, but no body was ever found. His family and friends seek answers to no avail. With the abrupt turn of events, everyone was asking the same question: “why”?

It turns out that he used his piloting skills to venture into another career: smuggling marijuana. Suffering from gout, he then turned to cocaine to alleviate the pain and eventually became a recreational user. When he was busted during a 1977 Miami DEA sting, the possibility of spending 20 years in prison was not an option.

This culminated into the idea of faking his own death. To make it believable, he and Sally took a self-hypnosis course to program the latter to believe he had actually jumped. Sounding like a plan too absurd to begin with, this actually worked. He vanished and hid from the law, determined to leave his old life behind.

However, his insane story of law-breaking exploits doesn’t end there. After he convinced everyone that he died, he became Lucas Noel Harmony. And no, he didn’t quit the drug smuggling business. In fact, his involvement in the criminal underworld of narcotics deepened when he became a smuggler for a Miami speedboat racer with closed ties to Pablo Escobar.

His tale later developed into a complex web of secrets that also involved gun-running and a covert war conducted with some of the highest officials in the US government involved. Stitching all these events into one docuseries are The Invisible Pilot creators Phil Lott and Ari Mark, who also executive produced the series alongside McKay, Todd Schulman, Craig Hodges and Jon Bryant Crawford, Nancy Abraham and Lisa Heller for HBO.

The Invisible Pilot is a new three-part docuseries that premiered in Australia via BINGE and Foxtel. It first aired on Foxtel on 6th April at 9.30pm via FOX Docos with the final episode airing on 20th April. On BINGE, all episodes became available for streaming on demand on 19th April 2022.
