BBC One’s new series, The Gold, dramatises the extraordinary and epic story of a supposedly ‘run of the mill’ robbery that made an irreversible impact and ripple effect on global events. In 1983, six armed men broke into a security depot near London’s Heathrow Airport, an action with an aftermath so large-scale it became the biggest theft in the world at the time.

With those involved accidentally finding gold bullion worth £26m, the events generated in the span of a decade made it one of the most remarkable true crime cases in British criminal history.

The Gold TV series plot

The iconic true story of the Brink’s-Mat robbery and the events that followed are the subject of BBC’s new crime drama, The Gold. It all began on 26 November 1983, when six robbers broke into the Brink’s-Mat security depot, expecting to steal around £1 million worth of Spanish pesetas. What they found was way more than that, stumbling across £26 million (now equivalent to over £90 million) worth of gold bullion, diamonds, and cash.

What started as an ordinary ‘Old Kent Road armed robbery’ became a massive criminal undertaking with widespread and violent repercussions, leading to international criminal investigations.

It was the crime of the century at the time.

The theft and the disposal of the bullion resulted in the creation of money laundering at an international scale, delivered the dirty money needed for the London Docklands property boom, united blue and white collar criminals, and instigated a series of murders linked to the case.

Created by Neil Forsyth, The Gold features an all-star cast that includes Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey), Dominic Cooper (Preacher), Charlotte Spencer (The Living and the Dead), and Amanda Drew (A Very British Scandal). Slow Horses actor Jack Lowden also stars as Kenneth Noye.

Accompanying his drama, Forsyth also wrote The Gold: The Real Story Behind Brink’s-Mat: Britain’s Biggest Heist, which he co-wrote with the show’s researcher Thomas Turner.
