Irvine Welsh’s novels are no strangers to screen adaptations. Trainspotting, The Acid House, and Filth are just some great examples. In 2021, another creation from Welsh’s roster of literary achievements was adapted for television, his 2008 novel, Crime.

The TV version, also titled Crime, had its exclusive premiere on BritBox and stars Dougray Scott as Detective Ray Lennox. Now returning for a second season, fans in Australia can find out when and where to watch new episodes using this guide.

What’s in this Guide?

The second season of Crime is set to premiere on BritBox, the show’s exclusive streaming platform in Australia. For those who haven’t seen the first season, BritBox still offers all six episodes on demand.

While Welsh’s books have been adapted for movies, this marks the first time his work has been created into a television series with Welsh adapting the novel for TV himself.

Crime is based on Welsh’s novel of the same name and serves as the sequel to Filth, which had also been adapted for film in 2013 and featured a different main character.

In season 1, DI Ray Lennox investigates the disappearance of a young girl, but his search for the truth is not without complications and personal challenges. Battling alcohol and drug addiction, he must set aside his internal struggles in order to solve crimes and save lives in the process.

A six-part crime thriller series, it’s set in Edinburgh and focuses on Lennox and his investigation. The detective’s personal demons, however, invite more troubles, causing him to constantly clash with some of the people around him.

There’s also the urgency to uncover the truth and find the girl as her mysterious disappearance grips the city while bringing paralysing fear. While he and his colleagues try their hardest to get to the bottom of the case, there’s a sinister serial killer lurking in the shadows and waiting to strike.

In season 2, Detective Lennox is back at Edinburgh Serious Crimes. After his haunting breakdown in the previous season, instigated by the pressures of making sure that Mr Confectioner pays for his crimes, he’s determined to prove to everyone that he’s fully recovered.

However, returning to the force also means he must find ways to adapt to some major changes. But when his former colleague is attacked, he and the entire team must once again solve a mystifying case that screams revenge. A BritBox original exclusive, Crime Season 2 is a must-see this month.

Check out the trailer for the new season right here.

Jamie Bell played the role of DI Lennox in the movie adaptation of Filth, but Crime’s television adaptation has Mission: Impossible 2 actor Dougray Scott playing the part. Joining him in the main cast are Joanna Vanderham, Angela Griffin, Ken Stott, and Jamie Sives.

The complete cast of Crime TV series is listed below.

  • Dougray Scott as DI Ray Lennox
  • Joanna Vanderham as DS Amanda Drummond
