In her searingly emotional debut film, Charlotte Wells leaves a remarkable impression in the coming-of-age tale Aftersun, following a father and a daughter’s holiday together. The movie, with its powerful and heartrending portrait of depression, portrays a young man grappling with responsibilities. He struggles to keep things afloat, all while playing the loving and idealistic father. Twenty years later, his daughter looks back to those moments, as she tries to reconcile the father she knew with the man she didn’t.

The National Board of Review named Aftersun one of 2022’s best films with Wells hailed as one of the most promising new voices in British cinema. Here’s how you can watch the film online in Australia.

What’s in this Guide?

Aftersun movie plot

Sophie was 11 years old when she went on a holiday with her father Calum at a Turkish resort on the eve of his 31st birthday. During this time, the world of adolescence creeps into Sophie’s mind, being more observant and perceptive than ever. She was becoming her own person.

But beyond her view was her father, weighed down by the conundrums of life. Something’s not going right and he tried to alleviate his worries by reading books on meditation and doing Tai Chi. Beyond her eye, Calum struggles greatly. Despite the heaviness of what he was going through, Sophie’s tender recollections implied that they had an amazing time together.

Twenty years have passed and adult Sophie is a parent herself. She looks back on their vacation, reflecting on their bond and private melancholy. Own memories real and imagined fill the gaps as she wonders what her father must have been going through. Experiencing life long enough, Sophie feels empathy for her father’s sorrows, ones she didn’t really understand when she was a child.

Aftersun received much acclaim upon release, with critics particularly praising Wells’ screenplay and direction that made the Aftersun ending explained profoundly without the need for more words. Lead stars Paul Mescal, who played the father Calum, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor. Wells also received the award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer at the BAFTAs.
