Joe (Daniel Henshall) is an inmate who won’t get to spend Christmas with his family for the first time. The film also offers a glimpse of Joe’s life in prison and his efforts to avoid trouble in order to return home sooner. He then meets fellow inmate Noel (Hugo Weaving), a veteran lifer who helps him maintain his good behaviour, despite the persistent provocations of certified troublemaker Red (Kieran Darcy-Smith).

The adaptation also provides a glimpse into the lives of his family, who also struggle with the fact that Joe won’t be there with them. Playing Joe’s wife Rita is French actress Agathe Rousselle in her English-language debut, Brenton Thwaites as his brother Dan, Kate Mulvany as his sister Stella, and Damon Herriman as her husband Roger.

In addition, young star Jonah Wren Phillips plays Joe’s son Angus, while Rose Statham and Izzy Westlake star as Joe’s twin daughters Frank and Dolly. There will be cameo appearances from Australian musicians as well, including Adam Briggs, Dallas Woods, Brendan Maclean, The Grates’ Patience Hodgson, and Electric Fields’ Zaachariaha Fielding.

The film is produced by Meg Washington, Nick Waterman, Hamish Lewis and Schuyler Weiss, best known for co-producing the acclaimed 2022 film Elvis.
