Violent Night is a 2022 action comedy film bringing to our screens a different kind of Santa Claus. Starring Stranger Things actor David Harbour as the not-so-jolly and definitely cranky Santa, Christmas takes a dark turn when a group of mercenaries breaks into a wealthy family compound. Certain they’re going to wrap up the holiday season $300 million richer, the bad guys forget one thing: Santa is real and he knows his way around ass-kicking, especially if his drunken gift-dropping is interrupted.

What’s in this Guide?

Violent Night movie preview

Set in Greenwich, Connecticut, the film follows Jason Lightstone, his estranged wife Linda, and their daughter Trudy, who visit Jason’s mother Gertrude’s mansion to celebrate Christmas. Joining them are his sister Alva, her new boyfriend and wannabe-action star Morgan Steel, and Alva’s online streamer son Bertrude.

When vicious mercenaries attack and ruin a wealthy family’s Christmas Eve, a drunk Santa, who happens to be there to drop presents, is forced to showcase his knack for fighting. And so with strong bloody violence and coarse language, Violent Night is definitely not for the faint-hearted. But it’s not all serious business – there is also a fun riff and whole lot of entertainment to be had.

This original screenplay from the writers of Sonic the Hedgehog is harder-edged holiday fare, perfect for those who prefer their Christmas movies with a bit of bite. Violent Night is a holiday movie from director Tommy Wirkola, starring David Harbour as a surprise combatant Santa Claus. Packed with action and surprises, and as suggested by its title, Violent Night is definitely not your typical Christmas flick.
