Based on Adam Kay’s memoir of the same name, This Is Going to Hurt follows Kay as a junior doctor who works his way up through the ranks of hospital hierarchy, ultimately working as an obstetrics and gynaecology doctor at the NHS labour ward.

The book in which the series is based on is mostly composed of journal entries during his medical training. Just like the memoir, the new BBC drama offers a brutally honest depiction of life as a junior doctor scrambling tirelessly on the wards, at the expense of his personal life and every aspect of his own health and well-being.

The series also depicts life on and off the hospital ward, particularly how junior doctors struggle to deal with the repercussions of their career, from handling vicious hours and overwhelming responsibilities to facing neglect and mistreatment. All these experiences amount to impossible burdens which they also bring with them in their respective homes, harming their personal relationships.
