The North Water TV series

The North Water is a five-part television series that is based on Ian McGuire’s novel of the same name. The story revolves around a discredited ex-army surgeon who accepts a position as a whaling ship doctor on an Arctic expedition. He encounters a harpooner on board, a brutal murderer whose amorality has been moulded to match the hardships of his life.

In an attempt to flee from the horrors of his past, he embarks on an ill-fated adventure with a homicidal psychopath. The series is set to drop in Australia in November, and you can find out how to watch it here.

What’s in this Guide?

In this gripping drama, Henry Drax (Colin Farrell) is a harpooner and brutish killer whose amorality has been moulded to match the harshness of his life. He goes on a whaling voyage to the Arctic with Patrick Sumner  (Jack O’Connell), a disgraced ex-army surgeon who comes on as the ship’s doctor. Sumner, hoping to escape the horrors of his past, embarks on an ill-fated journey with a homicidal psychopath. His narrative becomes a hard fight for existence in the Arctic tundra as he seeks redemption.

The series’ development began in late 2016. Colin Farrell was selected to play the title character in the miniseries in February 2019.  In April, Jack O’Connell was added. Stephen Graham, Tom Courtenay, and Peter Mullan are among the other cast members that have since been revealed. Filming started in Hungary and on the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard (Spitzbergen), with the production crew travelling north as far as 81 degrees to shoot pack ice scenes, which is the farthest point north any television drama has ever been filmed.
