David Cronenberg’s 1988 cult classic Dead Ringers is getting a fresh update in Amazon’s upcoming series of the same name. Taking over Jeremy Irons’ dual role as identical twin gynecologists is Rachel Weisz in her first major TV venture. Weisz plays Elliot and Beverly Mantle, twins who share everything from careers and drugs to romances and the unrelenting desire to break societal constraints at the expense of medical ethics.

Confirmed to premiere in April, find out more about Amazon’s highly anticipated remake of Dead Ringers here.

Dead Ringers TV series preview

In the original Cronenberg film, Elliot and Beverly Mantle are identical twins with successful careers as gynecologists, but with stark opposing personalities. Elliot, the more confident and cynical of the two, is a shameless womaniser who enjoys seducing his patients.

When he loses interest in them, he passes the women on to the shy and passive Beverly. Their vicious ploy finally ends when Beverly falls in love with an actress patient Claire Niveau. What follows is a twisted love triangle that escalates into drug addiction, delusions about “mutant women”, and debilitating paranoia.

The Amazon series starring Rachel Weisz will most likely take the narrative in interesting new directions to execute its modernised style while staying true to the themes of its predecessor. With gender-flipped versions of the twin doctors, this modern take revolving around female twin gynecologists definitely brings more intrigue and significance given the timely issues that women face with regards their reproductive health.

The logline for the new series offers a clear glimpse: “The Mantle twins, identical from head to toe, are on a mission to change the way women give birth, starting in Manhattan.”

Carrying an unapologetic desire to squash any bounds on medical ethics in order to challenge antiquated practices, the twins have one central goal in mind: to bring women’s healthcare to a world that accepts and liberates. Only their medical endeavour is possibly laced with danger and delusions. “Radicalism always begins with something small,” the dialogue says in the first teaser trailer that Amazon has just released.

Head writer Alice Birch is also showrunner of the series with a directing team that consists of Sean Durkin (Martha Marcy May Marlene), Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body), Karena Evans (Snowfall), and Lauren Wolkstein (Queen Sugar). Lead star Rachel Weisz also serves as executive producer for the show.
