How to watch The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power in Australia

The Lord of The Rings: The Rings of Power, the most expensive TV series ever made ($58.125 million per episode), hit streaming TV last September. Based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s history of Middle-earth, fans can journey into the wondrous world of Middle-earth and meet the heroic legends of the mythical Second Age.

Developed by J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay, The Rings of Power will feature younger versions of characters who appeared in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films. It’s considered as one of the biggest events on television this year, which you can easily watch on demand in Australia using this guide.

What’s in this Guide?

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power preview

The Rings of Power is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It will cover Middle-earth’s Second Age, an era of relative peace, that is until the forging of the Rings of Power. Described as Tolkien’s symbolism in the way that power conflicts with moral behaviour, the rings ultimately secure the Dark Lord Sauron’s rise to power.

The Rings of Power pave the way for the re-emergence of evil in Middle-earth, leading to the fall of the once breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor. As the rings’ destructive power corrupts the rulers that wear them and threaten to engulf all the world in darkness, kingdoms that rose to glory crumble and are left in ruins. The Second Age also marks the last alliance between Elves and Men.

Amazon’s Rings of Power, which the company secured by buying the TV rights for The Lord of Rings, is a five-season series in the making worth at least US$1 billion. Finally launching in September this year, it will be the most expensive television series ever made. It’s worth noting that Rings of Power isn’t a direct continuation of the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.

But considering its hefty production budget, Rings of Power intends to reach the same grandness in terms of cinematography and production design that the films are best known for. From the mysterious depths of the Misty Mountains to the marvellous forests of the elf-capital of Lindon, Middle-earth’s Second Age will be brought to life like no other.

Moreover, the series will also introduce new creatures that we haven’t seen in the movies – including female orcs, as confirmed by executive producer Lindsey Weber. The Orcs will also be portrayed differently to coincide with the Second Age’s period. As it’s just a different time for them, they’ll be initially presented as scavengers, not the formidable armies we now know them to be.

There’s also the question of coverage. All the major events in the Second Age take place over thousands of years in Tolkien’s original stories. However, it’s been confirmed that all the major stories will be covered in Rings of Power with Tolkien’s stories condensed for the series.
