When a therapist witnesses a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, she begins to experience distressing visions that put her sanity to the test. As an overwhelming terror begins taking over her personal and professional life, she is forced to confront her troubling past in order to get away from a horrifying new reality. Based on the 2020 short film Laura Hasn’t Slept by Parker Finn, who also wrote and directed the feature film adaptation, the Smile movie explores trauma through supernatural lens.
A commercial and critical success, Smile finally drops on streaming TV in Australia. Here’s how to watch online.
What’s in this Guide?
Smile movie (2022) preview
Therapist Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) starts experiencing frightening occurrences after witnessing a patient take her own life. As her hallucinations continue, she becomes unhinged and unpredictable to people around her. Nobody also seems to believe what she’s going through, including her fiancé Trevor (Jessie T. Usher), dismissing all the disturbing things she’s seeing as signs of her sanity slipping away.
With the help of her ex-boyfriend detective Joel (Kyle Gallner), she discovers several cases where someone witnessed a suicide, only for the witness to also die by suicide in front of someone else, continuing the unbelievably horrific pattern. Witnessing such a tragedy herself and her fearsome delusions, she becomes certain that she’s next. To free herself from the trauma-fuelled pattern, which seems to be the excruciating burden that the ‘curse’ is feeding off from, Rose must go to extreme, unimaginable lengths to survive.
