A Spy Among Friends preview

Kim Philby, played by Guy Pearce, is a brilliant and charming agent who’s risen through the ranks to lead Britain’s counterintelligence against the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War. In reality, he’s a KGB double agent betraying his friends and colleagues by transmitting confidential information back to Moscow.

Meanwhile, Damian Lewis’ Nicholas Elliott works for M16 as an intelligence officer. He gets the biggest shock of his life when he discovers that his closest friend of 23 years and colleague Kim Philby has been betraying him and their country’s intelligence community from the very beginning.

In all those years that they’ve spent their time together, from going to the same schools to joining the same clubs and navigating wartime intelligence side by side, he finds out that Philby had been secretly working as a double agent for the KGB and how very word he shares with him is used as a weapon by the enemy. 

And so A Spy Among Friends examines the devastating repercussions of such a colossal betrayal, including countless operatives losing their lives every time a spy operation goes up in flames. Even more crucial to the narrative is Philby working for the enemy all those years and how he’s able to do so undetected.

Now available to stream in Australia, this highly anticipated double agent drama is created by award-winning British writer Alex Cary (Homeland, Taken). Cary also served as the show’s executive producer alongside BAFTA Award winner Patrick Spence (Adult Material, Fortitude, Peaky Blinders), while BAFTA winner Nick Murphy (Save Me) directed all episodes.

BritBox Australia secured the rights to broadcast the series as part of a deal with Sony Pictures Television.
