The second instalment of Ryan Murphy’s anthology series, Feud, has been confirmed to premiere in February next year. Titled Capote vs. The Swans, the second season follows famed author Truman Capote’s life throughout the 1970s and his friendship with some of Manhattan’s socialites.

As the title implies, Capote’s relationship with his “swans” disintegrates after he exposed their innermost secrets in his short story “La Côte Basque 1965”, leading the author to be ostracised from New York society.

What is the plot of Feud: Capote vs The Swans

During the peak of his career, highly regarded author Truman Capote ingratiated himself into New York’s elite after the success of his book In Cold Blood, befriending the wealthy and the glamorous.

Calling them his “swans”, Manhattan’s rich and famous include grande dame Barbara “Babe” Paley (Naomi Watts), Slim Keith (Diane Lane), C.Z. Guest (Chloë Sevigny), and Lee Radziwill (Calista Flockhart).

Fascinated by the enchanting lives they lead, Capote successfully gained their trust and friendship, ultimately becoming their beloved confidante. But when his ambition spirals out of control, he finds himself betraying his “swans” by exposing their most intimate secrets in his short story La Côte Basque 1965.

An individual chapter in his still-unfinished novel Answered Prayers, the story was published in Esquire in 1975 – to disastrous backlash. The easily perceived betrayal quickly ended his social life with no chance of redemption, finding himself shunned by the high society he much loved.

The second series is based on Laurence Leamer’s best-selling novel Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era. Oscar-nominated director Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting, Milk) has been confirmed to direct all eight episodes alongside Max Winkler and Jennifer Lynch, with Murphy (American Horror Story, Glee) serving as the creator.
