With the recent rise of video games being adapted for television like HBO’s The Last of Us and Paramount+’s Halo, it was only a matter of time before Fallout, one of the greatest video series of all time, would follow suit. And followed it did, when, in 2020, it was announced that a streaming adaptation of the video game franchise was commissioned by Amazon Studios.

Nearly four years later, the Fallout TV show has finally come together with a confirmed premiere date, a welcome news for fans worldwide. The series, which is set 200 years after a nuclear apocalypse, hails from the creators of Westworld

Here’s everything you need to know about the long-awaited TV adaptation of Fallout.

What’s in this Guide?

With Amazon MGM Studios one of the production companies helming the Fallout TV show, the series becomes an Amazon Prime Video exclusive.

Exploring Prime Video’s library is, of course, made easy by the service’s still-standing 30-day free trial offered to new customers.

Good news to all fans of the video games waiting for the RPG series to translate into a TV show – the Fallout TV series release date in Australia is finally happening Thursday, 11 April 2024, a day earlier than the previously announced premiere date.

Fallout will have eight episodes, all launching on Prime Video on the same day.

Every episode of the Fallout TV show only streams on Prime Video, a streaming service that’s part of the larger Amazon Prime. New customers can test run the service for 30 days free. After that, the monthly plan is $9.99/month, or save a little with the annual plan at $79.

Amazon Prime is no stranger to big streaming productions with originals like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Citadel, The Boys, and many more. As of this writing, Prime has only one streaming tier which allows up to three concurrent streaming and 4K video quality on selected titles.

Since there’s only one option, all these features are included in the $9.99 monthly plan. With other streamers, users are required to subscribe to a premium plan to get all the best stuff. So despite the recent price increase, this still makes Prime Video one of the cheapest services in Australia.

In Fallout, the world has long been ravaged by a nuclear war, leaving most of the planet a radiation-filled wasteland. Several decades later, Lucy, a young Vault Dweller, decides to leave the safety of her underground bunker to venture outside.

It’s been hinted that a family tragedy will cause her to want to leave, otherwise wandering around a blighted world she hasn’t seen and experienced is beyond reckless and scary. She then finds herself roaming the ruins of Los Angeles, where she comes across multiple groups vying for power and control.

In the Fallout universe, Vaults are shelters built before the apocalypse and the survivors who used them to ride out the nuclear war became the Vault Dwellers. These shelters apparently did the job of preserving humanity, or at least some part of it, allowing survivors to adapt and rebuild. The show’s protagonist, Lucy, is a descendant of the original Vault Dwellers.

In the games, players create their own character as they navigate a new, horrifying world filled with dangers from raiders, monsters, robots, and more vicious creatures. The series adaptation appears to be going for the same thing, as per Amazon’s first teaser trailer.

It is, however, worth noting that the show won’t directly adapt the games or any of their stories. But watching the trailer, we’re already sensing that the show aims to incorporate the games’ surreal combination of gore, violence, and humour.

Developed by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, the team behind Westworld, Fallout will comprise eight episodes, with Nolan directing the first three of the series. Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner, meanwhile, take on showrunner duties.
