Annika Season 2: Release date and where to watch in Australia

December 10, 2024

In short:

Annika Season 2 is now available in Australia, with streaming services like BritBox and ABC iView offering every episode online. Annika is a Scottish crime comedy series that follows the title character, a Detective Inspector for the Glasgow’s Marine Homicide Unit.

What’s next:

The BBC series is set to drop on BritBox this week, with episodes streaming from Sunday, 15 December. Many shows from the BBC have found a new home in Australia, on BritBox that is, and the Annika TV series is just one of the long list of riveting programs you can access using the British content-dedicated service. A new third season is also in the works.

Starring Nicola Walker as the show’s unforgettable heroine, Annika revolves around DI Annika Strandhed, single mom and head of Glasgow’s Marine Homicide Unit.

Investigating mysterious murders in Scotland’s waterways, her unorthodox style when she solves crimes, her quirky sense of humour, and regular breaking of the fourth wall to discuss the case with the audiences give Annika an entertaining twist while keeping us on the edge of our seats.

Walker is no stranger to acclaimed British shows — Spooks, Unforgotten, and Last Tango in Halifax are just some of the titles under her belt. We’ll also see more of her as the witty and brilliant detective with Annika Season 3 happening in 2025.

Annika Season 1 premiered in 2021 on Alibi. It found a wider audience after its BBC debut in 2023. Here in Australia, the first season is available on a variety of streaming TV platforms including BritBox and Amazon Prime Video. As for Annika Season 2, fans will be able to watch new episodes ad-free on BritBox.

Annika Season 2 premiered with the first episode titled “A Song Of Scottish Seals”. The new season kickstarted with a new puzzling case: a phone is handed in to the MHU headquarters. To everyone’s surprise, the said phone has a brutal drowning recorded on it. The team investigates the crime, leading them to a businessman who ordered the killing to be carried out by a cab driver.

Season 2 also brings to fans the confession that Annika has been struggling to muster since the first series: the truth about Morgan’s real father. Speaking of Annika’s teenage daughter, Morgan finds herself employed at a remote Scottish eco-resort. Annika visits her but the holiday quickly turns sour when a local builder employed there is found dead.

Wrapping up the second season, Annika and her team are embroiled in a much more complex case after discovering the brutal murder of a former police officer. Created by Nick Walker, Annika is based on the BBC Radio 4 drama “Annika Stranded”. Philip John, Fiona Walton, and Annie Griffin serve as directors with Kieran Parker producing.
