More than two years after its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, the comedy-drama Am I OK? will be finally available to a wider audience with HBO Max and Warner Bros. acquiring the film. It stars Dakota Johnson as a conflicted woman in her 30s who, clearly, as per the movie’s trailer, doesn’t have things figured out. It turns out that not discovering her true sexuality early on is the source of her dilemma.

Now that she knows, she will have some catching up to do with things she hasn’t tried and explore more new things that can potentially make her happy. Confirmed to have its global premiere in June, here’s what you need to know about the new Dakota Johnson-starrer.

As a Max exclusive, Am I OK? will be streaming in Australia on BINGE and Foxtel (including Foxtel Now).

Lucy (Johnson) is a 32-year-old woman who’s beginning to wonder why her love life isn’t as rich as those around her. She also can’t shake off the feeling that something is missing, even though she has no idea what it is that she’s supposed to be looking for. Eventually, she realises that the reason she’s never had any real relationships with guys is because she’s a lesbian.

After her true self is finally unveiled to her, the next step will be to come to terms with her sexuality and only then will she feel, you know, OK. Luckily, she has the best friend in the world, Jane (Sonoya Mizuno), who’s more than ready to help her find clarity amongst things that are initially very confusing.

This comedy-drama starring Dakota Johnson and Sonoya Mizuno is directed by Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allynne. It is based on the experiences of the film’s screenwriter, Lauren Pomerantz, inspired by her real coming out story and friendship with her best friend Jessica Elbaum.
