★★★★★4/5

Monkey Man marks an impressive directorial debut for Dev Patel, who brings a raw and visceral energy to the screen. The film tells the story of Kid, a man who fights in an underground arena, clad in a gorilla mask, as he seeks revenge against the city's corrupt elite. Patel's direction is both dynamic and thoughtful, allowing the audience to experience Kid's emotional turmoil alongside the adrenaline-pumping fight sequences. The cinematography captures the grimy underbelly of the city, enhancing the film's overall atmosphere. The performances, particularly that of the lead, are compelling, adding depth to a narrative that could have easily become one-dimensional. While some may find the violence excessive, it serves a purpose in illustrating Kid's internal struggles. Overall, Monkey Man is a gripping tale of vengeance that resonates, making it a worthwhile watch for fans of intense character-driven stories.

★★★★★3/5

Monkey Man is a wild ride that certainly pulls no punches, but does it hit the mark? Dev Patel's directorial debut dives headfirst into the chaotic world of underground fighting, and while the premise is intriguing, the execution feels a bit uneven at times. Kid, our masked protagonist, is a complex character, but the film sometimes leans too heavily on its violent scenes rather than fully developing its emotional core. The fight choreography is impressive, but I found myself wishing for more depth in the storytelling. There are moments of brilliance, especially in the cinematography, but they are often overshadowed by the relentless brutality. If you're looking for an action-packed film, Monkey Man delivers, but those seeking a nuanced exploration of its themes may leave wanting more. It’s a solid effort, but not without its flaws.
