Everything you need to know about Southern Phone Mobile Plans

This Aussie mobile phone provider stakes its name on value

So, you want a new mobile phone plan, and you want it to add value to your call habits. What do you look for? If the answer is “unlimited calls and texts, plus decent data” then Southern Phone has you spoiled for choice! While many other telcos make a big deal about simplifying their mobile plans, Southern phone does something different – you get to choose data to suit your needs and budget and get the peace of mind that comes from having the services of an Aussie-based customer call centre. Plus there’s one other feature that no other telco we know of has on offer – you can choose the network that best suits you.

This arrangement is no accident. Southern Phone was founded in 2002 with the assistance of a multi-million dollar grant provided to local councils located in regional Australia. This grant was aimed at giving people in communities and town centres outside of major metropolitan areas the same level of access to telecommunications services as their peers in big cities. There was a lot of ground to cover, as the cost of phone services in more remote areas was a source of growing concern and the lack of competition meant some areas of service delivery weren’t always up to scratch.

When the local councils involved founded Southern Phone, the idea was to introduce an agile, caring company that would challenge the established providers in many smaller centres by delivering lower prices and improvements in service standards. To keep their customers’ interests at heart – their own internal constitution – only local Australian councils could become shareholders in the company, meaning that there would be no external pressures that could turn their attention from services to profit.

Southern Phone has a call service centre located in Moruya, NSW, a location that provides the local community with jobs as well as keeping the company’s services local. Your customer representative is responsible for helping you, the customer. This means that the person who answers your call is the person who is responsible for helping you – be it with billing questions or technical troubleshooting. Not only does this remove the chance of your call getting transferred overseas, but it also empowers the representatives to treat their customers the way they would like to be treated.

It appears to have worked. Southern Phone is now available all across the country. You can get a SIM card that works anywhere you find a mobile phone tower. That means you can easily get mobile service from Cape York to Zeehan and from Bega to Broome. All backed by amazing customer service and all available at prices that keep getting better.

Some telcos try to stand out on customer service or price. But Southern phone delivers both, with the added bonus of years of experience in serving customers across the country. Because Southern Phone was formed with the intent of making access to telecommunications services easy and affordable, they know what you need to get connected no matter where you are. And they’re happy to help you make it happen.

The final dealmaker for Southern Phone is something you don’t hear about often from a telco – profits. All the money the company makes goes back to the community. As an unlisted public company, the profits go directly to the shareholders. In the case of Southern Phone, those shareholders are local councils. So every dollar you spend with the company helps fund the official government organisations that support giving their local communities access to better communication options. And not to mention the funding grants and student scholarships Southern Phone regularly makes available to local and regional community NGOs. Since its inception, Southern Phone has returned a combined total of more than $15.8 million in profits, grants and scholarships. How many other private Australian telcos can you name that have done something similar?

Southern Phone Offers Quality Service Plus Flexibility

Southern Phone tries hard to deliver services that reflect their commitments and values. When it comes to mobile plans, they deliver quality services using trusted networks with a range of plan types to suit most needs and budgets. You can get everything from call and text credit through to unlimited plans, 2.5GB of mobile data to 60GB on month-to-month plans, which means you’re free to switch between the tiers on a monthly basis.

The combination of a choice of network and a guarantee is something of a rarity. And what’s more, it gives you unparalleled flexibility. Say for example that you’re living in an area that gets a great signal from one provider. Southern Phone lets you pick that provider at a reasonable rate. Then later you find yourself in a position that requires you to move or travel. And the service in that area? Not so great. With Southern Phone, you can switch from one to the other to see which one works best. Both Telstra and Optus cover major metropolitan areas. Optus has rolled out more towers along major transit corridors from most capital cities and into larger communities, while Telstra still has the network reach that covers more of regional Australia. However, Southern Phone has since made some changes rendering Telstra-powered SIM-only plans unavailable. That leaves Optus, which is still a competitive network to go for.

As for costs and inclusions, the new plans are designed to provide greater value while decreasing prices. There used to be two contract terms to choose from; now it’s just the month-to-month. Normally with a mobile phone plan, you pick the level that works for you and you stick with it. If you happen to go over your call limits, text quota or data cap, you’ll need to pay more. This is true with Southern Phone as well, except for two key details.

Firstly, all of Southern Phone’s mobile plans come with unlimited calls and text, so you will never run out of credit for calling standard Australian landlines and mobiles. Messaging with standard SMS and MMS to Australian numbers is also covered by this, with other calls and messages charged at a different rate.

The other big deal is mobile data. If you are a light user, then 2.5GB of mobile data can be enough to get you through the month. A little text messaging, searches, email, maybe a quick route check using a map app – these are all yours. If you go over your limit, Southern Phone will automatically give you a data boost of another 1GB for $10 to last you the remainder of the month. And they’ll do this three times. This is useful if you have a data-heavy month that you didn’t see coming, but can get expensive in the long run. A better bet is to bump up your mobile plan to the next tier to get more data. You can change between plans on a monthly basis, so if you know one month is likely to see you on your phone more, then it’s easy to plan ahead. Conversely, if you’re in for a quiet month, you downgrade your mobile data plan to save money.

But the biggest and boldest move yet is Southern Phone’s promise to give you the best deal they have. When you sign up, you can stay with that plan as long as it exists. But if they are able to offer you a better deal, they will proactively reach out to let you know about it. Southern Phone’s customer service representatives check new plans, products and pricing against what you currently have and if they find that a plan offers better value, they’ll get in touch and offer to move you to the new plan without any hassle.

Sign-Up and Save with Southern Phone

Gaining access to one of Southern Phone’s excellent mobile plans is as streamlined as it gets. You can choose to either fill the form on their website or call their service centre between 8am and 8pm AEST, seven days a week, and they will mail out your SIM card. The online form is fast and efficient- great if you know which plan you want straight off the bat – while the call centre can help you pick a plan that suits your needs. Another nice benefit that helps save money is the ability to bundle your existing Southern Phone telco products into one monthly bill. You can combine your home phone rental with your mobile plan, or even roll your broadband and home phone together with your mobile bill for one simple payment that can help save you money.

Southern Phone’s Mobile Plans

The mobile plans offered by Southern Phone are powered by the Optus 3G/4G network. These plans are likewise unlimited, letting you call and text standard local and national numbers and Australian mobiles. Both standard SMS and MMS are included in these unlimited plans. For data, you can start out with 2.5GB per month or go as high as 60GB per month for no lock-in contract options.

Switching between plans is easy. If you find that you need more data, or if you want to drop back to your original plan to save money, just call Southern Phone’s customer help centre. As mentioned before, Southern Phone also offers home phone line bundles and broadband bundles to compliment their mobile services. The plans range in cost according to the speed, calls, and data, offering you a mix of value that’s sure to please, as you’re saving on telco services you might already have. Check out our mobile comparison page.

Light Users – 2.5GB mobile data per month

This plan is for the kind of mobile user that knows mobile data exists but doesn’t feel the need to indulge in it, or prefers to save money through their mobile habits. Southern Phone’s mobile plans start from 2.5GB. For modern smartphones, it’s not going to go very far. That’s about 160 minutes of web browsing a day for a month, or 500 songs on Spotify. It can be enough but that’s not including the amount of data that goes into passive apps used to check the weather, browse email and use messaging apps. On the flip side, even 5GB a month from other providers will net you over 7 hours a day of browsing – which is unlikely unless you’re using your mobile as a wireless hotspot- or 1,280 songs on Spotify. While all these sound like a lot, that’s only around 40 songs a day. If you’re listening to music on your commute or at the gym, you’ll find that you hit this cap pretty fast.

Medium Users – 10GB to 30GB mobile data per month

This data range is one that most modern smartphone users will be comfortable with. On the low end, 10GB a month will get you by if you keep your usage in check when you’re out and about and rely more on WiFi to do the heavy lifting. On average, 10GB can deliver about 500 four-minute-long videos – which is a lot if you’re not binging – or about 30 hours of video calls. Again, this should be plenty for basic use, but if you’re conferencing for work or talking with loved ones overseas more frequently, then a bigger data allowance will help. That means anything up to 30GB, which delivers nearly two hours a day of streaming shows over 30 days (depending on the streaming quality and compression) or nearly 150 hours of video calls – that’s around seven whole days of talking face-to-face.

Heavy Users – 60GB mobile data per month

This level of mobile data is for the power users. The people who live on their smartphones – be it for work or leisure or a mix of both. In any case, these caps are there for you if can’t get enough internet. Messaging, voice calls, email, online shopping, streaming music – you name it, you can do it. While it’s not the same thing as having unlimited broadband (compare unlimited broadband here), the amount of data you tend to use with a mobile plan is often less than using a dedicated laptop or desktop. For streaming Netflix in SD, that’s about 60 hours of binging. Imagine that. Even in HD, you could watch several hours of Netflix a month and still have some data to spare. Not that we recommend it.

Generous Connections – Mobile Plans, Home Plus and Triple Home Bundles

For those looking to get connected with a mobile plan, home phone and broadband, Southern Phone’s Triple Bundle delivers the goods. It includes a home phone line, mobile plan and broadband on an NBN50 connection. The Triple Bundle also offers heap of features, including unlimited landline and mobile call credits, mobile data, and unlimited broadband data that are sure to get you connected in ways your smartphone just can’t compete with.

Next Home Phone from Southern Phone

Southern Phone has Senior Solutions catered to senior customers who prefer things the way they are. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by big changes, especially the elderly. Hence, Southern Phone’s Senior Solutions, which include the Next Home Phone. This allows senior customers to keep their existing home phone without the internet required and makes it an essential service “for old times sake”. There are three Next Home Phone plans to choose from: Small (pay as you go, $25/month), Medium ($44 credit, $44/month), and Large (unlimited national, local & mobile calls, $60/month). There’s better news for seniors, too. Not only can they retain their phone line sparing them from inconveniences, but they also get monthly discounts if they have a valid Seniors or Pensioners card — $5 off the Small and Medium plans and $10 off the Large plan. There’s also an unlimited international call option at $15/month, available for Medium and Large plans only. Plus these plans are offered half the price for the first six months.
