In HBO’s new limited series, Kate Winslet portrays Chancellor Elena Vernham, the leader of an autocratic regime in a fictional European nation. Quirky but brilliant, she has grown unstable after being cooped up in the palace, refusing to perform her political and social affairs and duties outside.

Her increasing paranoia leads her to turn a volatile soldier, Herbert Zubak (Matthias Schoenaerts ), into a confidant. But when Zubak’s influence over her alarmingly overshadows her own thoughts and decisions, both her inner circle and government begin to crumble.

Anxious about the future of her regime and with domestic turmoil threatening her position, she attempts to expand her power to disastrous and seemingly irreversible results.

The Regime is directed by Stephen Frears and Jessica Hobbs. Winslet executive produced the show alongside Succession executive producers Will Tracy and Frank Rich. Tracy also serves as series creator and showrunner.
