The Exhibit: Finding the Next Great Artist is a new show that pits seven rising artists against each other for a chance to win $100,000 and the opportunity to showcase their artwork on a solo exhibition at the renowned Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and sculpture garden. The artists take on current social issues, such as police brutality, gender roles, animal rights, and the pandemic, and create original pieces of art that are then judged by experts from the art world. Hosted by Dometi Pongo, the show is an engaging platform for emerging artists to showcase their creativity while exploring critical contemporary issues.

A collaboration between MTV and the Smithsonian Channel, the competition series arrives on your screens this month. Find out how to watch every episode online using this guide.

What’s in this Guide?

Art enthusiasts have something to look forward to this month with The Exhibit TV series. Co-produced by MTV and the Smithsonian Channel in collaboration with the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the show follows seven emerging artists as they vie for the top prize of $100,000 and an opportunity to display their work at the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum.

The artists, hailing from various disciplines and backgrounds, are then judged by some of the most influential figures in the contemporary art world. One of the participants, Misha Kahn, is a New York-based artist and designer known for creating imaginative and playful objects, which he produces using a myriad of materials and impressive techniques.

Baseera Khan, another from New York, explores the relationship between materials and their economies, and how their dynamics impact labor, familial structures, religion, and spiritual well-being. Through her work in performance, sculpture, and installation art, Khan offers a compelling commentary on these complex social issues.

Also from  New York City, Clare Kambhu, an arts educator, utilises her creative skills to highlight the beauty and significance of everyday objects that are typically overlooked. Her works draw attention to these seemingly mundane items and their surprising potential to challenge societal norms and educational institutions. Through her art, Kambhu lets spectators see the world in a new light and question the limitations dictated by traditional systems.

Northfield, MN. based Onondaga/Niimíipuu (Nez Perce) artist, Frank Buffalo Hyde, is known for his paintings that depict contemporary Indigenous life in a vibrant and satirical way, offering a unique perspective on the world around us. Jillian Mayer, based in Miami, explores the impact of technology on human existence, particularly how it shapes our physical experiences in a digital landscape. Her art is expressed through various mediums including photography, video, sculpture, performance, web-based experiences, and installation art.

Jennifer Warren, a Chicago-based oil painter, known for her work that gives focus on themes of nature, beauty, and the Black body, uses her passion for new ideas and techniques to express the everyday, intimate, and meditative moments that reflect the Black experience. With a largely self-taught background, Warren brings a unique perspective to her art. Jamaal Barber, another artist in the competition, examines how culture, social issues, and identity can overlap with Blackness through mixed media.

The show is a platform for these seven artists to showcase their creativity and unique perspectives while exploring pressing social issues. With the mentorship of established figures in the modern and contemporary art world, The Exhibit MTV series is an engaging competition program that promises to inspire and captivate audiences.
