What is Thriller 40 about?

The new documentary is a celebration of Michael Jackson’s groundbreaking studio album four decades after it was released to global acclaim. It brings viewers back to that remarkable period of time when music videos became an engrossing way to promote a song, transforming the format into a serious art form.

Thriller was among the first albums that utilised music videos for promotion. Now almost every song is further promoted through a music video, cementing the album’s long-lasting impact in industry. Testament to its significance, it also made its way into the prestigious National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.

Even up to now, Thriller remains to be the best-selling album of all time (it has sold 70 million copies globally), which makes the album’s 40th year anniversary an important milestone in music.

Directed by Nelson George, the documentary will be a delightful watch for fans of the late singer, featuring never-before-seen footage and interviews with other musicians, including Mary J. Blige, Mark Ronson, will.i.am, and Usher.

The director of the Thriller music video, John Landis, is also featured as we’re given must-see footage behind the making of what is now one of the most iconic music videos of all time.
