The latest from Marvel Studios is a miniseries based on the Marvel Comics character, Moon Knight. It is the sixth TV series existing in Marvel’s expansive universe and stars Oscar Isaac as the title character Marc Spector. Struggling with dissociative identity disorder, he would later become the moon’s knight of vengeance after being given powers by the Egyptian Moon God, Khonshu.
Dealing with the world’s conundrums and dangers while initially unaware of his multiple identities, the protagonist’s plight in facing his true self is Moon Knight’s way of tackling mental health head on. In Moon Knight, Marc Spector is a mercenary who suffers from dissociative identity disorder. With his multiple personalities, he becomes entangled with a deadly mystery involving the powerful gods of Egypt. Each of his identities are unique characters:
Steven Grant, an amiable and good-natured British gift shop employee and Mr. Knight, Spector’s detective personality. After Steven discovers that he shares his body with mercenary Marc Spector, tension between these identities intensifies as Steven is forced to reckon with his mental health condition, which first manifested as blackouts and memories of another life.
There are so many stories and characters covering Moon Knight’s origins, as well as other events that brought about the creation of his multiple personalities. Disney Plus’ upcoming miniseries will likely cover all the major ones across six episodes. And considering Moon Knight’s compelling and prolific backstory, there’s still a lot of touchpoints that need exploring to better delve into Moon Knight’s mind and his journey. Fans may also be wondering whether the series, at some point, will feature two moon knights in the form of Moon Knight’s evil twin, Moon Shade.
Before Marvel had announced that a TV series based on Moon Knight was being developed for Disney Plus, there were already several plans to bring the character to the live screen with director James Gunn (The Suicide Squad) wanting to pitch a Moon Knight film to Marvel. Plans to create a live-action series featuring the character became official in 2019.
Oscar Isaac was then confirmed to play the lead role in early 2021. Aside from Isaac playing Marc Spector/Moon Knight, the series also stars Ethan Hawke as the villain Arthur Harrow, who is intent to kill Moon Knight at all costs. His character on the TV series is based on the comic book, but is also a combination of Moon Knight characters, Sun King and Morning Star.
How many Moon Knight episodes?
Moon Knight consisted of six episodes. After years of development and production facing a bit of a complication due to the Moon Knight leaked suit last year, Moon Knight finally premiered with the first episode on Disney Plus on 30th March 2022. The remaining ones launched on the streaming service weekly. The first episode is written by Jeremy Slater (The Umbrella Academy, The Exorcist). The series finale aired on 4th May 2022
