Conversations with Friends follows aspiring writer Frances, a college student constantly navigating love and life through the friendships and relationships that she comes across with and forges along the way. She has a deep connection with Bobbi, an ex-girlfriend who also remains to be her best friend.
While they perform spoken word poetry in Dublin, they meet a married couple – Melissa, an older writer, and her husband, Nick, a handsome but reserved actor.
While Melissa and Bobbi openly share their attraction for each other, Frances ends up having an intense secret affair with Nick. Ultimately, they’re all entangled in a complex maze of romance and misplaced affection that forces Frances to confront her own weaknesses and dilemmas.
The Conversations with Friends casting features newcomer Alison Oliver as the lead protagonist Frances. Joining her are Sasha Lane (American Honey), Joe Alwyn (Mary Queen of Scots), and Jemima Kirke (Girls).
Directed by Leni Abrahamson, it is produced by Element Pictures and adapted from Sally Rooney’s first ever novel. Writer Alice Birch also joins the creative team of the series, alongside executive producer Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Emma Norton, and Sally Rooney herself.
