Compare the Best Unlimited Broadband Plans in Australia

Not so long ago, if you wanted a broadband plan that came with unlimited data, then you’d have to shop around a fairly costly set of plans from a limited range of providers. Times have changed, though, and unlimited plans are now everywhere – much to the relief of streaming TV binge-watchers!

What does unlimited data really mean?

It’s a word that gets thrown around a lot more these days than it used to, but there’s a very good reason for that. Unlimited broadband plans are incredibly popular, and what used to be a costly, niche offering from a handful of broadband providers has now become almost an industry standard.

The reason for this move to unlimited plans is, above all else, driven by customer demand. And that demand is not coming from people who spend all day downloading games, or streaming TV shows, or backing up entire computer systems to the cloud – though they’re all big fans of unlimited plans as well! No, the reason for the explosion in the number of unlimited plans is one simple word: Netflix.

The arrival of Netflix & Streaming TV

The way Netflix (and Stan, Amazon Prime Video and others) has changed our everyday entertainment lives is nothing short of revolutionary, and Australians have of course taken to it like the fast adopters of new tech that we so often are. Suddenly, here is this always-available super-channel with tons of fresh new dramas, comedies, feature films, documentaries – all of it in HD and lots of it in pristine 4K. And that means data, and plenty of it.

While it’s entirely possible to be a Netflix user, even at 4K, with a data-limited broadband plan, it’s not quite the same. You find yourself nervously checking your monthly allowance before watching something to make sure you can “afford” it. You decide not to watch things because you don’t want to “waste” data. You’re on a budget, and it isn’t fun!

Why you need unlimited internet

With an unlimited broadband plan, you will probably find, if you look at your usage at the end of the month, that you didn’t use anywhere near as much as you thought you did – but the point is the freedom from worrying about it at all. The internet becomes a true utility, an always-on pipe that never runs out of water no matter how much you drink. And the best thing about unlimited plans today is that they’re affordable. So how do you tell all the plans apart, and which one’s right for you?

Everything you need to know about unlimited broadband

Still not sure what unlimited plan to get — or if you actually need unlimited data for your internet connection? Before shopping around for plans across Australia’s leading providers, make sure to keep yourself informed with things you need to consider in choosing an ISP or a specific unlimited broadband plan.

Speed

You’re getting unlimited data – you can take that as a given. All the plans you see on this page offer it. So what’s the difference? Well, there’s a few things that separate some of these plans, but the most obvious one is speed.

The NBN is divided into a set of different “tiers” of speed, which is advertised with two numbers – your maximum download speed and the maximum upload speed. NBN (and this site) usually refers to only the download speed these days – such as “NBN 25” – but when you see speed advertised as “12/1” or “50/20” that’s what it means, with the numbers being in megabits per second (Mbps).

So the first decision you make should be what speed you need. Think about what you’re going to use your new unlimited broadband connection for, and how many people in your household are going to use it. Are you planning on streaming lots of Netflix? You’ll want to start with at least an NBN 25 plan (see some of the best shows to stream on Netflix). The slower NBN 12 is fine for light internet use but is going to be marginal for streaming HD Netflix – and if you want to stream in 4K, NBN 25 at a minimum is essential. If there’s multiple people in your household that are likely to be streaming at the same time, head for an NBN 50 connection, which has the speed to spare to effortlessly handle multiple demanding users (see our top 5 broadband plans for families guide). Thanks to NBN price reductions last year, NBN 50 is much, much cheaper now than it used to be.

You’ll also see NBN 100 connections advertised – and yes, they’re super-fast and great for people who, for example, download a lot of games for PC or consoles. But it comes at a price premium, though providers like Telstra and Southern Phone sometimes provide monthly credits on their NBN100 plans, substantially lowering their costs. NBN250 is also getting added by telcos like iPrimus while Telstra offers speed add-ons that can have typical download speeds of at least 250 Mbps too. If there’s a lot of 8K streaming going on in your household, this should be able to handle it. The only caveat here is that a speed plan this high is only available at  FTTP and HFC customers in select areas.

You can filter out all but the plan speed you want by clicking the “customise your search” button above.

ADSL

There are some great value unlimited plans available for those users still on ADSL, which are priced these days at half what they used to be (though they do cost more in regional areas). Make sure you get an ADSL plan that has no lock-in contract – you want to be able to switch to whatever provider you choose once the NBN arrives in your area.

Entertainment

To really get the most out of your shiny new unlimited connection, you have the option of adding more entertainment options – and there are some great-value bundles that include access to premium TV that you won’t find on Netflix. Whether it’s a bundle that offers Telstra TV 3 or a bundle that includes an actual satellite Foxtel service with the new iQ4 box, there’s some serious value to be had by bundling your services together.

Getting What You Pay For

With any NBN provider, you now will see a number quoted right next to the speed of the plan – a number that helps let you know how busy and congested that provider can get during the peak evening hours when everyone’s trying to stream Netflix at the same time. The number is listed as the “typical evening speed” and you want it to be as close to the plan speed as possible (for technical reasons, it will never equal the plan speed). So for example, Telstra quotes for their NBN 50 plan, a typical evening speed of 50 Mbps. That’s a sure sign of a fast, uncongested broadband provider, and you should make a note of it when comparing plans and providers.

The Best Value Unlimited Broadband Plans and Bundles

If you’ve been browsing through the list above for broadband and feel a little overwhelmed, that’s fine – as we said, there are a huge amount of unlimited broadband plans around now, and choosing between them can be confusing. But let’s look at just a few typical uses for a broadband connection and suggest a plan that’s worth checking out.

The Entertainment Fan

If you’re the sort of person who’ll be spending much of their time streaming the latest Netflix shows and movies, binge-watching The Grand Tour on Amazon Prime Video or trying out the streaming service BINGE, then Telstra Broadband’s current popular bundle is pretty close to unbeatable. The Telstra TV + Unlimited Data offer gives you a snappy NBN 25 broadband connection with unlimited data, a home phone line with all calls within Australia included, and the latest Telstra TV box to stream it (and all the other services) on. The addition of Telstra TV on a monthly repayment also gets you 20,000 Telstra Plus Bonus Points. At $89/month it’s hard to beat for sheer value, especially if you make a lot of use of your home phone. Signing up for an unlimited iPrimus plan also gives customers the option to bundle broadband with Fetch TV with one premium channel pack of your choice.

The Premium Speed User

Dodo has since earned themselves a glowing reputation for over a decade now as one of Australia’s best NBN providers. Their plan for power users that love to chew through data and download those 110GB games like Red Dead Redemption 2 in minutes rather than hours is made easily accessible. It runs at the NBN 100 speed, meaning not everyone will be able to get it – but if you can, $85/month for that level of raw speed is more than worth it. If your NBN can’t make it to 100 Mbps and higher, you can get an unlimited plan from Dodo at a still-snappy NBN 50 speed for only $75/month.

The Bargain Hunter

If you’re trying to keep an eye on the pennies and don’t feel spending close to $100 per month on broadband is worth it, don’t worry – there are still unlimited broadband options available to you! One at the bargain end of the scale is Southern Phone NBN Unlimited plan running at Standard speed (NBN 25) which is priced at only $65/month. There’s no lock-in contract, and even better, Southern Phone often throws in some monthly discounts so you save in the long run.

Still on ADSL, Keeping the Home Phone

There’s plenty of options for those who haven’t been switched over to the NBN yet and would like to keep the home phone around. Telstra’s internet plans are still available on ADSL, for instance. Other providers like Southern Phone also delivers ADSL services but they’ve recently discontinued offering it. iPrimus still provides an ADSL plan but it’s not advertised on their site. You will need to call their sales team to connect with ADSL.

Limitless!

No matter what your budget and no matter what your needs, there’s an unlimited broadband plan these days that will work for you – they’re now almost the default for all but the very cheapest plans, and in a world where we’re streaming and downloading more than we ever have before, that’s a very good thing indeed!
