Dexter: Original Sin - Release date and where to watch in Australia

Dexter: Original Sin is the prequel to the crime series that aired on Showtime for eight seasons, about a forensic technician who hunts killers to satiate his own lust for blood.

The new show is a Paramount+ with Showtime original, therefore will be streaming on Paramount+ in Australia from Friday, 13 December. The first episode, which you can watch with a free trial, is titled: “Original Sin”.

During a time where most streaming services are revisiting popular shows in the past by creating prequels, sequels, spin-offs, and reboots, Dexter is actually worth delving into.

The original series features flashbacks from when Dexter was a teen and thoroughly guided by his foster father to redirect his urges towards those who deserve it. With Original Sin, we’re about to see more of Dexter’s past as he officially begins to embrace the role of an “avenging serial killer”.

Set in 1990s Miami, it follows a young Dexter Morgan as he becomes the full-fledged serial killer trained by his adoptive father to target killers who need to get what they deserve.

The new Dexter show features an ensemble cast that includes Christian Slater as Harry Morgan with Michael C. Hall returning as a narrator. Patrick Gibson, best known for his roles in Netflix’s The OA and Shadow and Bone plays the young Dexter Morgan.

Dexter Original Sin premieres in Australia on Friday, 13 December. The 10-episode series rolls out weekly on streaming TV with the finale scheduled to air on 14 February 2025.

Dexter Morgan (Patrick Gibson) starts his life anew as he scores a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department. For him and his adoptive police officer father Harry Morgan (Christian Slater), this is the culmination of all those years of training he has spent under Harry’s tutelage.

For those who haven’t seen the original Dexter series, it follows the titular character as he hunts down killers who manage to get away from justice. By doing so, he’s secretly living a double life: a forensic technician during the day and a vigilante serial killer during the night.

Orphaned as a kid, he was adopted by his father, Harry, who eventually recognised his sociopathic tendencies. To keep his homicidal urges in check, Harry trained Dexter to direct his lust for blood towards killers who got away with their crimes.

The prequel series will chronicle Dexter’s early days interning at the police station, where we’ll find him kickstarting his vigilantism. Michael C. Hall, who just reprised his role in Dexter: New Blood, will be the young Dexter’s inner voice in the new show.

It is created by Clyde Phillips, who also executive produced the show alongside Hall, Scott Reynolds, Mary Leah Sutton, Tony Hernandez, and Lilly Burns. Robert Lloyd Lewis serves as producer.
