The inspiring story of American swimmer Gertrude Ederle was recently adapted into a movie with Young Woman and the Sea.

Daisy Ridley stars as Trudy Ederle, the first woman to successfully swim the English Channel, breaking massive barriers including the “animosity of a patriarchal society”. The film also stars Stephen Graham as Trudy’s trainer Bill Burgess and Tilda Cobham-Hervey as Trudy’s supportive sister Meg.

What’s in this Guide?

The new sports drama will be streaming in Australia on Disney Plus. It’s worth noting that the movie didn’t get a theatrical release here, going straight to Disney+ instead for watching on demand.

The biographical drama tells the wondrous story of competitive swimmer Trudy Ederle. Following her gold-winning victory at the 1924 Olympics, she became set to accomplish a daunting undertaking that no woman had ever done before – swim the English channel.

This challenge entails swimming a distance of 21 miles from France to England, all while battling strong currents, unpredictable weather conditions, and the risk of hypothermia.

The film adaptation chronicles not only Trudy’s harrowing physical journey, but also the emotional weight of pursuing something extraordinary during a time when women were believed to be too weak to compete.

Despite many people rooting against her and wanting her to fail, Trudy persevered against all odds, leading her to accomplish an incredible feat that cemented her legacy in sports.

Directed by Joachim Rønning from a screenplay written by Jeff Nathanson, the film is produced by Top Gun Maverick producer Jerry Bruckheimer alongside Chad Oman and Jeff Nathanson. It is based on Glenn Stout’s book of the same name.
