Wolf Hall revolves around Thomas Cromwell (Mark Rylance) and his rise to power, eventually becoming an advisor to King Henry VIII (Damien Lewis). Season 1 covers his humble beginnings as a blacksmith’s son and a lawyer, and the path he takes to climb up the ranks, ultimately becoming the king’s chief minister.

While there’s an eight-year gap between the first and second season, Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light picks up where the first series left off, tackling events following the execution of Anne Boleyn (Claire Foy). Cromwell continues to influence the king, making him one of the most powerful politicians in the court.

Season 2 also covers King Henry VIII’s third and fourth marriages to Jane Seymour (Kate Phillips) and Anne Cleeves (Dana Herfurth). It is, however, the king’s marriage to Cleeves that will result in Cromwell’s downfall, signalling his fall from grace and power.

In addition to Rylance and Lewis, the Wolf Hall cast also includes Timothy Spall as Duke of Norfolk, Anton Lesser as Thomas More, Jonathan Pryce as Cardinal Wolsey, Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Ralph Sadler, and Emilia Jones as Anne Cromwell. Tom Holland, who played Gregory Cromwell in Season 1, was replaced by Charlie Rowe in Season 2.

The Wolf Hall TV series is based on Hilary Mantel’s trilogy of novels. The adaptation is written by Peter Straughan and directed by Peter Kosminsky. Colin Callender is executive producer while Mark Pybus serves as the show’s producer. Wolf Hall Season 1 won the Golden Globe for Best Miniseries in 2016.
