The Hunger Games film series movies are based on Suzanne Collins’ trilogy novels of the same name, which follows teenage protagonist Katniss Everdeen. The first movie was released in 2012, ultimately becoming a smash hit. Three more sequels have been released: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1, and The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2.

One of the highest-grossing franchises of all time, the film series shines in their portrayal of relevant themes such as class discrimination leading to resistance movement, social inequality, and the long-lasting impacts of war. The performances of the cast, particularly that of Jennifer Lawrence, also strengthened the movies’ overall appeal.

With every The Hunger Games movie being a massive success, the entire franchise is an important milestone for establishing a female hero in mainstream media. Since the sci-fi action and adventure genre is mostly dominated by male protagonists, Katniss Everdeen constitutes a refreshing change.

The international success of the franchise is also an affirmation to fans that The Hunger Games universe is here to stay. After the accomplishments of all four movies, a prequel film titled The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which centres on the young Coriolanus Snow, is now available in Australian cinemas, and later on streaming as well.

If you haven’t watched the movies yet, you can easily stream all four titles online in Australia using selected streaming TV services, which also offer free trials for streaming online.

You can stream all The Hunger Games film series movies in one place on Foxtel Now. In order to access over 1,000 movies on demand, the service offers the Movies pack, which you can add on top of the base Essentials pack.

All four The Hunger Games movies starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth – The Hunger Games, The Hunger Games Catching Fire, The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1, and The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2 – can be streamed via the Movies Action channel on Foxtel and Foxtel Now.

What is The Hunger Games about?

Set in a dystopian country called Panem where 13 districts suffer in poverty while Capitol and its citizens enjoy much of the country’s wealth, The Hunger Games follows teenager Katniss Everdeen.

After her younger sister is picked in lottery to join a mandatory televised battle royale death match called The Hunger Games, which Panem has every year, she volunteers as “tribute” to spare her sister from going through a horrible fate.

With her district’s (12th) male tribute, Peeta Mellark, they travel to the Capitol to train and compete. During the Hunger Games, Katniss’ choices and her actions instigated feelings of rebellion among Panem’s oppressed citizens.

Throughout the movies, she becomes a symbol of hope, eventually rallying the people to stand up against the Capitol and end its vicious reign once and for all.

Four The Hunger Games movies have been released between 2012 and 2015. Below we’ve listed all of the released films and their most crucial events if you’re looking to revisit the story.

1. The Hunger Games (2012)

  • IMDB: 7.2/10

The first The Hunger Games film introduces us to Panem. Previously North America, it’s now a dystopian society with the Capitol controlling the rest of the country, which comprises 13 districts. While the Capitol lives lavishly, the rest of Panem’s citizens wither away in poverty.

We’re also introduced to Panem’s annual tradition of brutality where it forces every district to pick a boy and a girl via lottery to fight to the death in a televised event called the Hunger Games.

When District 12’s Primrose Everdeen is selected to compete, her older sister, Katniss, volunteers to take her place. Initially the underdog amongst the other tributes, Katniss leaves a long-lasting mark that threatens the tyrants of the Capitol.

2. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)

  • IMDB: 7.5/10

When Katniss and Peeta’s victory in the 74th Annual Hunger Games ultimately stirs a rebellion, increasing activities of unrest and protests, President Snow intends to show everyone that he’s in control by making abrupt changes in the rules for the upcoming 75th Hunger Games.

3. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (2014)

  • IMDB: 6.6/10

As chaos intensifies in the country and the Capitol inflicts more force to re-establish its authority and power, Katniss finds herself at the centre of a secret uprising that schemes to defeat Snow and his reign of terror.

She must also deal with the aftermath of District 12’s destruction and Peeta’s captivity.

4. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 (2015)

  • IMDB: 6.5/10

In the final The Hunger Games movie, the stakes are high and survival isn’t the only culmination that Katniss aspires to achieve.

With President Snow’s continuous brutality, Katniss and her friends – Peeta, Gale, and Finnick – embark on a mission to liberate the citizens of Panem and assassinate Snow.
