Those About to Die is director Roland Emmerich’s Gladiator-themed series featuring an ensemble cast that includes Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins and Game of Thrones’ Iwan Rheon.

American streaming service Peacock is offering a new original next month with the ancient Rome series, Those About to Die, which is also the streamer’s biggest production to date. As with any Emmerich-directed projects, we can expect the new series to be action-packed with jaw-dropping visual effects to boot.

Every episode of Those About to Die only streams on Prime Video, a streaming service that’s part of the larger Amazon Prime. New customers can test run the service for 30 days free. After that, the monthly plan is $9.99/month, or save a little with the annual plan at $79.

In addition to offering third-party content, Amazon Prime is no stranger to big streaming productions with originals like The Rings of Power, Citadel, The Boys, and more. As of this writing, Prime has only one streaming tier which allows up to three concurrent streaming and 4K video quality on selected titles.

Since there’s only one option, all these features are included in the $9.99 monthly plan. With other streamers, users are required to subscribe to a premium plan to get all the best stuff. So despite the recent price increase, this still makes Prime Video one of the cheapest services in Australia.

Set in 79 AD, an ensemble of diverse characters navigate the corrupt world of Ancient Rome. At the centre is the gladiatorial sports that have everyone lusting for blood and violence.

Complicating this ancient tale of power and greed is the tension between the Roman Emperor’s two sons, both vying for the throne of their elderly father, Vespasian, played by Anthony Hopkins. Then there’s the scheming bookmaker Tenax (Iwan Rheon), who crosses just about any lines to acquire wealth and power for himself.

As their lives and journeys intertwine, we’ll get to see the full extent of corruption and deceit displayed “across the many layers of Roman society where sports, politics and business intersect and collide.”

Emmerich directed the series alongside Marco Kreuzpaintner, helming five episodes each. Producing the show are Stuart Ford’s AGC Studios, High End Productions, Street Entertainment, Hollywood Gang and Centropolis Entertainment.
