What is SpongeBob SquarePants about?

SpongeBob SquarePants follows the title character, a yellow sea sponge and one of Bikini Bottom’s aquatic residents. He also happens to be the most energetic and optimistic amongst his friends, which include best friend Patrick Star and Sandy Cheeks.

SpongeBob loves his job, his pet snail Gary, and his pineapple house. He rarely complains and strives to make everyone around him happy, even the snobby Squidward, who he thinks is his friend, but the ill-tempered octopus thinks otherwise. He even loves his boss Mr. Krabs, despite his obsession to make lots of money at the expense of his employees.

Mr. Krabs also has a business rival, Plankton, whose unsuccessful restaurant Chum Bucket failed big time that he’s become obsessed with stealing the Krabby Patty formula.

He is assisted by his computer wife Karen because of course he has a computer wife named Karen. His attempts to steal the formula always put SpongeBob right in the middle of danger, being Krusty Krab’s most dedicated worker.

Each day, SpongeBob and the residents of Bikini Bottom do what they love – wake up, eat Krabby Patty, play games, get in trouble, and say funny things. Even Plankton gets to do what he loves too, which is to ruin things for everybody.

Creator Stephen Hillenburg is a marine science educator who first came up with “The Intertidal Zone”, an educational comic book meant to teach his students about life underwater. SpongeBob the series originated from this comic book and was developed by Derek Drymon, Tim Hill, and Nicholas R. Jennings.

In addition to three Spongebob movies, the series also inspired two spin-offs: Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years and The Patrick Star Show
