In 2021, two Hollywood actors, Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mcelhenney, acquired the Welsh football team Wrexham AFC, its underdog story becoming the foundation of the docuseries Welcome to Wrexham. Before the takeover, the struggling football club was said to be on the verge of collapse. With this, the documentary follows Reynolds and Mcelhenney as they learn the ins and outs of football club ownership.

After a successful first and second season run, the sports documentary series is back for another round. Here’s how you can watch new episodes from Welcome to Wrexham Season 3.

What is Welcome to Wrexham about?

Wrexham A.F.C. is a Welsh professional association football club based in the working class town of Wrexham, North Wales. Formed in 1864, they are the oldest club in Wales and the third oldest professional association football team in the world.

In late 2020, Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds and Mythic Quest star Rob Mcelhenney announced their intention to buy the town’s historic football club through their RR McReynolds Company LLC.

The deal was finalised by February 2021 with the backing of the majority of the Wrexham Supporters Trust members. What happens next is an inspiring journey of two actors as they become football league team owners and the community that welcomes and supports them.

In the docuseries, Reynolds and Mcelhenney reveal how their bond with Wrexham AFC developed, ultimately bringing them closer to the team.

This connection is what later inspired them to buy the football team. And so, from Tinseltown to Wales, from the pitch to the locker room, Welcome to Wrexham documents their attempts to revive the team and bring uplifting changes to the local Wrexham community.

Wrexham has risen in the rankings of the National League during and after takeover. In the 2021–22 season, the first season under the new ownership, Wrexham placed second, earning them a spot in the National League promotion playoff.

However, they still fell short: in a match against Grimsby for a chance to play in the playoff finals for promotion, Wrexham suffered a heartbreaking loss. Despite the devastation, the first season still saw Wrexham win it all with incredible accomplishments.

In Welcome to Wrexham Season 2, the team’s elevated reputation has only raised the stakes. Their newfound stardom has King Charles intrigued that he visited Racecourse Ground to personally catch a good, long glimpse. McElhenney and Reynolds’ leadership also continues to profoundly impact the team’s performance and morale.

And for the first time ever in Welcome to Wrexham Season 3, the team is finally taking their place in the EFL after securing back-to-back promotions with a 6-0 win over Forest Green on April 13. Wrexham AFC will compete in League One for the 2024–25 season.
