The live action remake of the 1989 animated film The Little Mermaid has just been confirmed to make its streaming debut in September. Singer Halle Bailey stars as the spirited young mermaid princess Ariel, whose fascination with the human world only intensifies when she meets dashing Prince Eric.

Yearning to see Eric again, she makes a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula, who gives her human legs in exchange for her siren voice. The only catch is the magic only lasts three days and she must get a “true love’s kiss” if she wants to stay human forever. Otherwise, she returns as a mermaid under Ursula’s ownership.

The Little Mermaid 2023 plot

In this latest re-imagining of the classic fairy tale, Ariel, the youngest of King Triton’s daughters, has always been fascinated with the human world. Even more so because her father, ruler of the merpeople of Atlantica, forbids all merfolk from going to the surface. But fireworks are just too incredible to ignore that Ariel does exactly the opposite of what she was told from the beginning.

Her disobedience, however, leads to a fateful encounter that will change her life forever.

Meeting Prince Eric by saving his life, Ariel longs to know more about the human world beyond the sea. Her afflictions become too obvious that her father discovered about her going to the surface.

After a heartbreaking fight that resulted in the destruction of her beloved collection of human objects, Ariel finds herself willing to do whatever it takes to experience life on land. Desperate, she finds sea witch Ursula, King Triton’s sister who was banished many years ago. She offers to help Ariel but it comes at a high cost.

The live action film of The Little Mermaid was directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha) from a screenplay by David Magee (A Man Called Otto). Certain elements from the original film were also featured in the remake, such as the song “Part of Your World”.

The movie is a co-production between Walt Disney Pictures, Lucamar Productions, and Marc Platt Productions.
