The original High School Musical movies starring Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens captured the imagination of a whole generation when released back in the mid 2000s. Now the popular film has its own musical series that looks like having new audiences singing and dancing in front of their living room TVs. Now in its fourth and final season, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series stars a new generation of performers headlined by Grammy winner Olivia Rodrigo, Joshua Bassett, Matt Cornett and Sofia Wylie.

What’s in this Guide?

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series preview

The cast may have changed, but the kids at East High School still love to hit the high notes and dazzle with their choreography. With a little help from their music teacher, the students start laying down their plans for spectacular end of year high school theatre productions – Season 1 was High School Musical: The Musical, Season 2 was Beauty and the Beast (despite initial rumors that the second season’s plot would be about the production of High School Musical 2), and Season 3 was Frozen.

Before we dive into what awaits us in the fourth season, let’s do a little recount about what happened in the previous season. In Season 3, Gina, E. J., Ashlyn, Kourtney and Carlos head for California to attend Camp Shallow Lake, with most of the events taking place at the theatre camp over the summer school break.

The third season also signalled some changes for the cast of the show: Olivia Rodrigo starred as a recurring character only as she went to California to pursue a musical career and Larry Saperstein’s Big Red only appeared at the end of Season 3 during the musical’s opening night at the sleep away theater camp.

In Season 4, East High’s theatre kids are about to graduate but before they do, they’ll be having their own production of High School Musical 3: Senior Year, the final movie in the HSM trilogy. As it turns out, East High will be the film set for the upcoming High School Musical 4: The Reunion and Ricky and the rest of the gang will perform as extras. Disney+ has also confirmed that the new season will feature songs from the original franchise combined with original music.

The final season will also pick up where things left off: Back in Salt Lake City, Ricky and Gina will continue to explore their blossoming relationship, Kourtney gears up for college, and Ashlyn will embark on a journey of self-discovery. With so much going on in the upcoming fourth season, who else feels like rewatching seasons 1-3 while we wait?
