Apple continues to delve into the glorious world of science fiction with originals that are visually mesmerizing as they are thought-provoking. Constellation, Silo, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, For All Mankind, and Foundation are just some of the titles the streamer currently offers.

Joining Apple’s impressive sci-fi roster this year is the new Dark Matter series based on the science fiction thriller of the same name. And just like most of Apple originals, it features an ensemble cast that includes Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Connelly, and Alice Braga.

Here’s everything to know about the new Dark Matter TV show.

What’s in this Guide?

The Dark Matter TV series is created by author Blake Crouch based on his 2016 best-selling novel of the same name. It will stream exclusively on Apple TV+.

The streaming adaptation of Blake Crouch’s novel first entered into development in 2020. Apple officially greenlit production in March 2022 with the main cast announced later that year in September.

After almost four years, the best-selling book will be finally brought to life with the new Dark Matter series premiering with two episodes on Wednesday, 8 May.

It will consist of eight episodes, the remaining ones to roll out weekly on Apple TV+.

In this new television adaptation of the 2016 science fiction thriller novel of the same name, Aussie actor Joel Edgerton portrays former physicist Jason Dessen.

Seemingly living a good life with his wife Daniela (Connelly) and their son Charlie (Oakes Fegley). That is until one day, he doesn’t make it home and finds himself waking in a world he doesn’t recognise.

It turns out that Jason is “abducted into an alternate version of his life” by none other than himself, or another version of himself, rather. Desperate to return to his own family, he must learn to navigate a multiverse of realities that he himself had created.

His return to his own universe is made more imperative by the fact that the man posing as him and interacting with his family may have come to inflict them harm.

“Dark Matter” book author Blake Crouch, who serves as the showrunner, wrote the series alongside Megan McDonnell, Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry, and Ihuoma Ofordire. Jakob Verbruggen, who also worked on another Apple TV+ series (Invasion), directed the episodes. Crouch, Edgerton, David Manpearl, and Matt Tolmach are executive producers.

Dark Matter is a 2024 series created for Apple TV+, not to be confused with the series of the same name that aired on Syfy from 2015 to 2017.

Check out Apple’s new sci-fi series Dark Matter streaming on May 8!

If you’re on the lookout for more exciting sci-fi thrillers like Dark Matter, you’ll most likely enjoy similar shows on Apple TV+ like Constellation, Silo, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, For All Mankind, Foundation, See, Severance, Invasion, Dr. Brain, and more.
